Should parents with unruly kids be banned from public places?

Noisy children will no longer be tolerated in an Australian shopping centre in a move that one parenting expert says reflects society's growing intolerance. The Dee Why Grand on Sydney's northern beaches, which claims to cater for young families, has introduced its new policy following complaints about out-of-control children.

The notice from centre management reads: "Stop. Parents please be considerate of other customers using the food court. Screaming children will not be tolerated in the centre." Centre manager Brenda Mulcahy said staff and customers complained about children "running amok" and "screaming" in the food court, near the centre's playground for children aged under five.

She said children were sometimes so loud she could hear their screams in her office, which was "miles away". "People deserve the quiet enjoyment of their cup of tea," Ms Mulcahy said. "Mothers have to be more responsible. We have had so many complaints." She said some staff avoided the food court because they found the noise "unbearable".

A sign asking children not to scream was put up before Christmas but, after more complaints, the strongly worded sign went up last week. Parenting expert Dr Justin Coulson said it was a reflection on society becoming increasingly intolerant of young children and parents.

This is a play area in a mall food court? I have three toddlers. I wouldn't be welcome anywhere...with rules like this.

That said, we hardly go anywhere with all three because someone ALWAYS acts up.

who doesn't love having a kid(s) seated at a table or booth next to them while they scream and yell to the point you can't hear what the person at your table is saying

Funny how the parenting expert blames society for being intolerant, instead of questioning why parents aren't teaching their children proper public manners. And no, I don't want to hear about how difficult it is to control your kids. Plenty of responsible people do it, so can you.

BOOM! You've said it, right there. I am a father of two and Daddy don't play that shit. My kids are well behaved (even the toddler) and they are fully aware of the consequences of acting out in public. I've perfected my "Daddy look" and once they see that look, they straighten right the fuck up. My Ma didn't tollerate bullshit from me, therefore I don't tolerate bullshit from my children. Parents need to stop trying to be their kids' friends ang get back to being PARENTS!

Bingo.

This, people, is a proper parent. Take note. Take lessons. Breathe it in.

So happy everyone here has perfect kids who sit and listen and never act up.
We are strict and discipline is fast and furious, however with two boys, both who are very hyper active, shit happens.

I have a solution though, i would never spend a dime in that mall.
They can keep it all to themselves.

Is it possible their hyperactivity can be related to what you feed them? Sugar and carbs make them bounce off the walls right?

K-Mart Blue Light.

enough said.

.. hrm.. did not consider your age or country of origin. That's a joke someone made long ago about taking your kid to K-mart Blue light to beat them. Just a joke and no offense. I can only imagine 3 little ones at the same time.

They don't get any sugar treats. sometimes kids just want to be kids. You can control them sure but sometimes they just need to let loose. Anyone complaining about a navy being loud in public should keep it to.themselves you are not going to make any friends.

When i'm on a plane i will sometimes help a mom out who is around me. Occupy the kid while she regroups. You are stuck on a cylinder 30,000 feet up, make the place you are in a better one.

Nothing worse than badly behaved kids for me. I can't stand it at all, just last week me and my fiancee were in a restaurant, we got there at 8:05pm and at the table next to us there was a man, his wife and their kid, probably 1 year old, screaming it's head off.

As you can imagine, that ruined our nice evening in a nice restaurant, probably ruined quite a few other peoples as well. Why is a 1 year old kid out at that time anyway, I know parents have to eat and try to have a good time but get a baby sitter!

some parents just don't know how to be parents or try to be too 'nice' because they only get to see the kids on the weekends or something because they are divorced or whatever. i was at a busy restaurant a couple months back and we were seated beside two guys and a kid. well the kid proceeded to stand on the chair and scream and yell, throw things and scribble all over the table with a marker. the guys just did nothing but laughed at it all. people like that are the worst.

My sister was like that. She is now five. When she was younger and I went out with my dad, she would act out terribly nonstop. It was embarrassing and extremely unenjoyable. I stopped going out with them.

Back when I tattooed, I had a rule list posted, on the very bottom of the list it said "Crying children need fresh air, there's plenty of it outside, take them there!" Children were only allowed into the shop if they were with a parent and well behaved.. otherwise it was time for them to go..

If your child is screaming and crying and it goes on for an extended amount of time that is obnoxiously unreasonable you should prolly grab your kid and head for the door.. I hate when most parents just sit there and ignore the shit like its not happening.. identify what is bugging the child, then solve it, or tell them to knock it the heck off..
