is it me or this season of Spartacus sucks ball?

it went from one of my favorite shows to something I just watch just because I want to see how are they going to end it. I mean, it's so historically inaccurate and nonsensical that Spartacus might survive and overthrown the entire Roman Empire or even be kidnapped by aliens. But at least it was fun. Now, when it should be more exciting since that was the really interesting part in Spartacus story, it's fucking boring

discuss

Where the hell do you get those ideas? Kidnapped by aliens, lol? I think it's still pretty good and certainly interesting. Obviously they are compressing events that occurred over a few years time, limiting the scope of the size of the armies for practical reasons and taking some artistic license with events that happened over two thousand years ago. But the overarching gist of it is as historically accurate as one can expect. None of us know for certain if Spartacus died in the final battle with the Romans although he almost certainly did. It remains to be seen how they end this final season of the show and if they give us a glorious death, a tricky escape for Spartacus himself or they leave us with a Sopranos style vague ending.

Still liking it myself, wasn't impressed with how "someone to not spoil it" was killed in the last ep. That was just silly (the way he died), but other then that still into it.

Harvey misses the homoerotic scenes...

I found Spartacus in diapers much more stimulating:

well, for starters, 2 words: JULIUS CAESAR.

then many different issues like made up cities, names that weren't correct, Pompey nowhere to be found, the slaves in a single column when there were at least two and so on. While I understand some changes are made for artistic licenses as you mention, I'm a big fan of Ancient Rome history (I was born in Rome as well) and find the errors quite funny. As a matter of fact, it's the most entertaining part right now, to find the errors

I enjoy the show for what it is. If I wanted an accurate history lesson I would read a book or watch a documentary. They are sticking to the general theme and arc of the story of his rebellion and turned it into a fun, campy, escapist piece of entertainment.

I do agree that the new guy is just not as good as the previous guy was. It was sad that he died so young.

Spartacus is kind of loosely historically accurate. You can bet we won't see him die, because supposedly his body was never found. I'm sure they'll find a way to make it look like Rome lost the war, even though they technically beat Spartacus. A positive ending to a story that doesn't end well for the main character.

I'm loving this season, I did prefer to see the gladiators fighting in the arena but the story line had to progress past the house of Battiatus!

Maybe it's because I'm comparing it to the rest of the crap on TV that's just mind numbing garbage but I enjoy this series.

The producers of the show said that not a lot is known about Caesar's early days, so they took artistic license with his participation in the hunt for Spartacus.

Anyone that complains about historical accuracy should keep in mind that the history of those events was written by the Romans so there is obviously a high degree of probability that creative licenses were taken even back in the day.

For the record, Julius Caesar was captured and ransomed by pirates at one point in his life. He ended up going after piracy later in his military career and fucked them up good... perhaps he was getting back at them for uninvited butt play?

From the renowned podcast "The History Of Rome", Spartacus was captured and crucified.

That's what's in the Kubrick movie, but there's conflicting information about his death. Look it up.

That show is not even slightly accurate. Rome by HBO is the closest thing to an accurate portrayal of Roman society I have ever seen on TV.

i've never watched this show but i have a degree in ancient history, Plutarch ( who wrote the most about spartacus) is considered by most historians to be quite accurate in his accounting, he was also the most well-read person in rome from that time. he made nothing up himself and can be considered as reliable as his source material.

that is true, it's written by Julius Caesar himself in his memoirs.

However, by the time of Spartacus rebellion, he was in Asia, nowhere close to south of Italy. Let alone being a ninja, all sources from that time (including himself) says he wasn't a soldier at all, just a genius strategist (and yes, he also says that about himself).

If you want historical accuracy try the History Channel.

This show is purely for entertainment. I knew that the first time I heard "Fuck" fly out of Battiatus's mouth in episode one.

like I said before, I don't care about it, I just find it funny and kinda adds up to the entertainment. But I'd like some story, some plot, something.

You mention Battiatus, and there you have one of the reasons this season sucks and why it's the last one even though the director wanted to do at least 3 more seasons: they have no actors. Not a single one. They got rid of actors and added (or kept) some gym freaks and that's it. When you didn't know what evil plan were Batiatus, his wife, Glaber's wife, Batiatus rival and so on plotting, it was really fun. Now it is: they will go ninja mode. Someone will fuck someone else. Somehow they will survive one more episode (until they don't). The end. See ya next week.

Which is why I said "try". No guarantees of accuracy there either there either, but one's chances of finding it there are probably greater than HBO.

He wrote about it as well as other historians of the age.

From the wiki:

"Hearing of Sulla's death in 78 BC, Caesar felt safe enough to return to Rome. Lacking means since his inheritance was confiscated, he acquired a modest house in Subura, a lower-class neighborhood of Rome.[20] He turned to legal advocacy, and became known for his exceptional oratory, accompanied by impassioned gestures and a high-pitched voice, and ruthless prosecution of former governors notorious for extortion and corruption.
On the way across the Aegean Sea,[21] Caesar was kidnapped by pirates and held prisoner.[22][23] He maintained an attitude of superiority throughout his captivity. When the pirates thought to demand a ransom of twenty talents of silver, he insisted they ask for fifty.[24][25] After the ransom was paid, Caesar raised a fleet, pursued and captured the pirates, and imprisoned them. He had them crucified on his own authority, as he had promised while in captivity[26]?a promise the pirates had taken as a joke. As a sign of leniency, he first had their throats cut. He was soon called back into military action in Asia, raising a band of auxiliaries to repel an incursion from the east.[27]"

I thought in the series that he wasn't supposed to be the original Spartacus but named after the famous rebel because of his attitude in the gladitorial ring?
