Porn Revenue drops from $14 Billion in 2005 to $5 Billion

Free Porn Killing the Industry

"adult websites, video on demand and live cameras -- account for only $2 billion in annual revenue, which is between 35 and 40 percent of overall industry revenue"

I assume by "live cameras", the writer means "live cams"...

Also, if you click to read the article, scroll down for an interesting, but somewhat predictable slideshow on the slowest days for porn viewing (holidays)

Ok lets turn it around, where is the $14 billion number coming from?

Really I dont care about the actual numbers, just wondering who comes up with this and how they can back it up.

Is XBIZ on GFY, perhaps someone from XBIZ can step in and reveal where they obtained the numbers or how they put together the numbers their managing editor quoted...

Are dating sites included in that number? I'd be very surprised if the industry as a whole did $5B in revenue. It's probably more like half that. It doesn't take a genius to figure out porn on the internet is free.

It's the fault of people like you Roald, Ron Jeremy thinks so. Right around 2:05-06 he mentions freeones as one of the sites that have caused everyone to go out of business.

http://vimeo.com/28323258#

2005 sounds about right as I know other people that peaked their income from then and say they have to work twice as hard to make half as much now.

When you a monopolistic empire, it's hard to truly understand what others are going through.
Freeones is ok, as far as I know they did everything legitimately and Roald worked for it.

I think it's hard to make an estimation especially when thinking that most porn producers, distributors and so on hide they money in various tax heavens like Cyprus (to name the ex-star of the moment).

The article clearly states that "adult websites, video on demand and live cameras -- account for only $2 billion in annual revenue".

That doesn't include fake profiles sites.

The cam guys on here know how much their industry is worth. I haven't seen a video on demand person here. People here have opined that adult web sites are $800m - $1.2b and it looks like this is another brick in that wall.

Probably means that adult pay sites have dropped to 10% of 2005 revenue, because they made up a much larger portion of the total revenue in 2005, and cams were less.

So adult online pay sites represent 4% of consumers. That means you bastards should be getting 1:25 rather than 1:2000! Hello! Lazy-asses!

Pretty much.. and for "webmasters", they've sure been goofed by a pretty obvious link-bait article.

Merchant accounts are all over the place, under so many different companies, under so many different fronts, etc.. No clue how anyone could possibly get even a rough estimate on what total valuation would be.

And what is online porn? The definition is so broad these days, I'm not even sure myself sometimes.

Numbers are down! No question, I know!
Some of the simpler producers that don't understand marketing very well produce for fun and get original content and barely make margin sometimes.
That guy has about 150-180 active members, I know a producer that has been online for about 10 years and has about 3-5k active members.

If you recall a thread back in 2007 with FTV, they made an announcement of thanking affiliates for getting them above the 30k active member mark.
As I recall that's a 2 man team and all they do is work, well deserved. Numbers are down, even if the article is wrong with stats it got it right.

agreed, watch msnbc and they say 20 billion dollar industry then turn around and see huffington say 5 billion, quite a range. maybe they mean by porn just something nsfw?

Of course they are. Considering many adult companies are set up in tax havens and are not reporting their income to anyone, there is no telling the true worth of the industry. At best they can estimate.

Nobody really knows. All anyone can do is guess.

Bob's numbers might be down.
Mary's numbers might be down.
Randy's numbers might be down.

But now there is Bob #2. Mary #2. Randy #5.

It's easy to look at your own numbers and say "yes, Internet porn is down! Across the board! Everyone is losing money!" But that totally discounts the now global market with so many more fingers dipping into the pie.

Anyone claiming they truly know is simply grandstanding, IMO.

they get that number the same way they get estimations on 'street value' of the amount of drugs they found in a bust.. they talk to one blow hard who pretends to be an insider and they run with that ember of info and call it a fact and try to make a fire out of it..

I'm wondering how people are speculating that the "actual" numbers are down when we, as an industry, get new customers every single day.

My other question is what defines online porn revenue? Do the billions of dollars that tubes make count as porn revenue?

Porn industry value in 2005 it was "approximately" 14 billion 322 million and 225,553.27 dollars. This is only an estimation, based on Mike South's blog and other trusted sources.

Those numbers might be pulled out of someones ass, but they are exactly accurate to what my numbers are.

2005 - Today = 60% drop in revenue.

I'm amazed at some of the money people seem to think we are making. I know 80% of the people on this list:

The numbers aren't even close to right.

I'm always in awe of the great business leaders of our industry. It'll be interesting to see if they can repay the loans which are due for the money they used to help destroy our industry. Or if they end in jail for not paying their taxes.

Really I dont care about the actual numbers, just wondering who comes up with this and how they can back it up.
I believe that was the guesstimate made by Paul Fishbein when he was speaking to the media a few years ago and they ran with it. However, he did qualify it by saying that no one really knows the numbers because most adult companies are private.
