Disney tried to trademark a Mexican holiday... and failed.

On May 1st, The Walt Disney Company filed 33 applications to trademark "Day of the Dead" ahead of the release of a new film. The fact that the company is poised to make a ton of money off a cultural holiday celebrated by people of Mexican and Central American heritage is sitting none to well with a lot of beaners.

What's Disney going to do next: buy Christmas Day?

From the LA Times.

Quote:
"This is outrageous! Companies like Walt Disney should not have the right to trademark and exploit Mexican culture such as the sacred day of Dia de los Muertos. It is to honor our ancestor and loved ones that have gone before us. I am outraged that they would trademark such an important day in our culture for which they have no knowledge. They are only interested in making a profit!!" Wrote Emilia Garcia of Santa Fe Springs, Calif. Michelle Owens of Los Angeles, Calif., writes:

"I am an American living in Mexico and I have seen how beautiful and sacred this holiday is for this culture. It would be a complete and utter shame for anyone to exploit something so deeply-rooted and rich in culture."

Sesma has already gotten 17,000 signatures for the petition.

hah, the latinos are just pissed because they know they then won't be able to sell their day of the dead t-shirts, hats, mouse pads, key chains, beer koozies, bumber stickers, magnets, etc.

I know of someone who was approached by Disney in the early 1990s to do some kind of design work on their CGI DINOSAUR movie. He declined (their contract would have meant they would own EVERY dinosaur sketch/project he'd EVER done), but later talked to another friend who DID work on the production—and was told why Disney went in on the auction/purchase of the T. rex fossil dubbed "Sue." Disney legal revealed at one meeting they really thought they could somehow trademark and OWN the Latin names of the dinosaur species! So their hubris has no bounds.

Doesn't Disney have a factory in Mexico to make day of the dead t-shirts, hats, mouse pads, key chains, beer koozies, bumper stickers, magnets, etc.

think about that

Wasn't Day of the Dead a George Romero movie? How can you trademark a movie name that's already in use?

I really enjoy Day of the Dead. They go all out to celebrate, and it's great watching the kids and adults all painted up. Some of the altars I have seen have been truly amazing with so much work and attention to detail put into them.

That just means that the movie they were going to call Day of the Dead will just be called something else. Something they can Copyright.
