Cheesy way to get old forum members to return? - GoFuckYourself.com

Call me cynical but an ooooold forum I used to visit just sent me a 'failed login' notification. It definitely got my attention. I wonder if forums use such notifications to get old members back. What exactly would they be coming back to if the forum is dead, right?

I have a hand full of vb forums i own, that of late, are getting hit by bots trying to login, with the result failed login emails being sent to members. Can been seen in the website's logs.
