Does paying more in rent make you work harder?

So im in Silicon Valley now, mountain view, palo alto etc, and the rents are very high here.

I found a place and got accepted and the rent is high.
I was wondering if paying more will make you work harder. No free time to play video games, but always working working
have you had this experience?

For me rent doesn't make a difference. I'm either motivated to work more or I'm not. Every day is different.

Why not try to achieve a cheaper life style?

For me, more relaxed equates to ideas flowing far more freely....

This is how I work best, but I do not recommend it for everyone. It will not work for everyone. If it works for you, do it. If it doesn't, stay far away or you will have serious issues down the line.

That would not make me work harder... It'd make me work like a slave for someone else. Fuck that. I'd move where it is reasonable and work at my own pace. But I have never been a gamer... No time for that kind of shit.

I don't see why "rent" would motivate someone.

It's 11pm on a Friday night and I'm still working. I don't pay rent, and my mortgage is pretty cheap.

if you are like me then financial pressure does motivate...you do not have to be broke or earning badly...you may just be looking to bring your life to the next level and for this you need to be "uncomfortable" in your current situation....biting off more than you can chew can be good sometimes...

If you need to worry about making your rent check for motivation, you've got a poor work ethic. Also, if your rent is such a big percentage of your income that that's an issue, you've got bigger problems.

Serious question - Why do you feel that you need to live there?

If you work online, you can theoretically live anywhere in the word - So as such - where you live doesn't matter?

Few years ago I rented 4 flats and spent a fortune on them. I never found spending a lot of money to be a motivation. Motivation comes from desire not from necessity imho

Let me expand on my above statement for clarity... I wrote that quickly earlier on, as I was rushing out the door...

So... At one point, I lived in a really nice apartment (Rented) in Woodland Hills... After rent, and other expenses (Such as travel) I was doing pretty well for myself...

Then my Wife wanted to move to a 'Mc Mansion' in Thousand Oaks... We Did. I didn't work HARDER cause I worked as hard as possible already. Sure we had a 'nicer place' with a heated pool, tennis courts and a Jacuzzi etc... But after the extra travel costs etc, we were a lot less well off at the end of the month...

We were spending a LOT more money, on living somewhere that we didn't really need to live (Was further away from the valley) just cause it was 'Status'... YAWN............

Eventually, I moved to downtown LA and lived at the 36,000 square foot studio I started managing... RENT FREE... I couldn't have been happier !

Not only did I get my pay from the Studio - I still earn't what I earn't before from my own stuff, and on top of that? NO RENT ! WINNING!!!!

So while my 'Status' dropped down - My bank account rose... I've never SEEN my bank account get bigger each week at the rate it did back then...

Point being - Minmal expenses -= Maximum profits...

So live wherever the fuck YOU wanna live. But if it costs to much - Dont work harder - Its your life, and you only get one shot at it

Move somewhere cheaper, if you even need to think you fotta work harder, just to afford to live there. At the end of the day, status means NOTHING... But bank balance does

The cost of rent doesn't make me work harder or less hard, but the size, location, etc. of the place I rent does have influence.

When I live in a place that I really like at a nice location where I'm very happy I work more/harder than when I live in a small shitty condo that I hate.

Enjoy your money but don't live above your means "just because" or to "motivate" yourself. That just sounds stupid.

If you have to work harder to pay the rent your expense to income ratio is to high.

I agree with this simple timeless advice. I would just like to add that from time to time it is nice to buy somethings you like. Even if they are small. I bought myself a very nice safety razor and brush recently for about $40.

Live below your means but comfortably. Your savings and investments are your best friend -- they don't say sorry when you need cash.

You can't cash in your rent receipts.

What is rent I live in my moms basement. Jk it obv has an effect on your perception of the need to work harder.

Your I'd be working smarter to make more money in that time frame.

My rent is expensive. I live under pressure since last time they raised the prices, and this makes me work harder for sure. Actualy, everything is getting expensive here.

A few months ago lived in Hong Kong for a few months paying $4700 a month in rent for a super small studio condo. It definitely did not make me work harder, because it was very depressing to live in a small place like that.
I now moved to another country where I only pay like $3500 a month for a big 3 bedroom condo right in the center of the city. Now I work a lot harder/more because I have a lot more space.
