Which Linux Disto Do you Prefer and Why

I am curious where most of you have migrated to as your favorite linux distro.

What do you always want on a dedicated box and why do you prefer your selection?

FreeBSD users chime in too if you prefer FreeBSD for a reason.

My goal is to find out what is the most popular.

I know no one will believe me, but I use FreeBSD.

(FreeBSD for desktop and servers.)

Mepis Linux (Debian) because it just works and the community help is great. Great for anyone migrating from Windows but not strictly a linux newbie version.

I got used to package management and where things are on Ubuntu from playing with the desktop version, so now that's what I use for a server. Mostly OS X at home.

So when you get web servers from a provider, and they list the options of the OS' you can order a dedicated with, what do you select typically on the standard packages?

I have about 300 servers just in and I want to pre-install them and im trying to determine what % of what I should have ready to go.

FreeBSD 9.1 with ZFS for storage, carp for IP level redundancy, relayd for any http/https redundancy, nginx for www, pf for firewalling, pfsync to keep firewall states in sync (optional), and you can easily achieve 100% uptime.

I suffer absolutely no downtime with this setup.

(I've failed power supplies, hdds, ssds, and cpus and never skipped a beat)

On my 3 VPS's i run ubuntu or debian (since they don't offer FREEBSD on openVZ VPS's).
If i had the chance, i'd use FreeBSD, i like the way it works (the webserver at my office that i set up is running nonstop for over 6 years now).

All my desktops and laptops run windows, since they're all company property, and i'm not allowed to change the OS :. I'd probably go for debian or freebsd if i had the opportunity

I'm personally feeling Ubuntu lately. I have bailed on CentOS but our customers still ask for it alot. Debian and Ubuntu are the best in my opinion. I still love FreeBSD but it not in demand as much the past two years at least. Seems everyone is asking us for CentOS Version 5.XX whatever and avoiding CentOS 6.

I have a few full cabs of empty servers so im trying to figure out how I should pre-install them to make them easy to sell to whoever needs a dedicated.

Maybe I can find someone who wants like 20 boxes cheap and they can tell me what they want on them. I have like an extra 100 to 200 servers that im sitting on. (Bought up an out of business isp who had a ton of hardware on pallets etc.)

I use Ubuntu. I like apt and Ubuntu's installer and device detection are great. Centos annoys me, I've always found rpm and yum to be a pain in the ass.

Actually, the "UNIX" portion of OSX is based on FreeBSD.

It's sort of a mixture of a few technologies. Mach, FreeBSD, some crap from NeXT too.

I assume you mean the constant compiling of ports. That shit is finally getting fixed with PKGNG.. it's basically just like aptitude on linux.
