:stoned Microsoft...biggest back track in history

Microsoft Is Removing Xbox One DRM

This could be the biggest backtrack in gaming history: Microsoft will reverse course on their DRM policies for Xbox One, dropping their Internet requirements and all restrictions on used games, according to the websites WhatHiFi and GiantBomb........

This and the Windows 8 back track are probably responsible for the latest re-org. Introducing the MS Back-Track division.

Most of their customers have already pre-ordered PS4's so it sucks to be them! Too little too late, Microsoft.

It's the same for their software too. I remember when Microsoft used to openly declare that they wanted to move fully to a mandatory "software as a service" where you pay a monthly or yearly fee forever instead of actually owning your copy of Windows or Office.

I remember when they introduced something like "smart tags" in IE for a brief time until the backlash made them kill it. Basically by default Microsoft wanted to add a link whenever certain words were mentioned anywhere in the browser and on non-Microsoft websites without permission.

http://betanews.com/2001/06/28/micro...es-smart-tags/

Quote:
Bowing to pressure from its critics and citing consumer feedback, Microsoft has decided not to include Smart Tags in the upcoming releases of Windows XP and IE6. Smart Tags use XML to turn certain keywords on any given Web site into links that provide additional information. Users would see a word with a purple dotted line underneath, and would be directed to sites hand picked by Microsoft ? including its own offerings. The technology will be shelved for now, but may appear in later product releases. This decision does not affect a similar feature found in the recently released Office XP.

This week's refresh of the Internet Explorer 6.0 Public Preview included Smart Tags, but disabled the feature by default. Webmasters who objected to the added functionality on their pages were allowed to disable the links with a simple HTML tag. But this did not stop customers and Redmond competitors from crying foul, claiming Microsoft had an unfair advantage over where visitors were directed.

Many content providers believe that Microsoft is using its OS leverage to push its own online services, and Smart Tags only added fuel to the fire. Instead of seeing the XP product launch engulfed by controversy, the software giant revealed Thursday it would remove the feature.

The Wall Street Journal's Walter Mossberg reports that Microsoft was overwhelmed with feedback, not having expected such a backlash to the technology. Redmond VP Jim Allchin told the Journal, "We hadn't balanced the legitimate concerns of the content providers with the benefits we think Smart Tags can bring to users." Microsoft intends to redesign the feature without the added pressure of a release deadline.

Now all they have to do is make a model that doesn't ship with kinect so they can sell it at a reasonable price.

Already pre-ordered a PS4, but probably gonna wait a bit after launch to pick a a Xbone.

I was ready to do the same. XBONE was first choice and would pick up a PS4 down the road.

After the announcements, I've gone and pre-ordered my PS4. Had given up all together on the XBONE. But this might have me buying one down the road.

I love that people are calling it the XBONE.

This pretty much sums it up:

"Microsoft chose the wrong path, plain and simple, and are now fixing it. Not due to a realization that what they were doing was wrong, but because a competitor forced their hand.

We will have to see how this all plays out in the end, but one thing remains true. Microsoft has embodied the cold, heartless, company persona and it's a true shame to see. They have a great product and these restrictions should never have been there in the first place."

Your Feedback Matters ? Update on Xbox One
By Don Mattrick, President, Interactive Entertainment Business posted June 19, 2013 at 2:00 PM

Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience.

For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future.

Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.

You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.

So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:

?An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games ? After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

?Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today ? There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.

These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.

We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds.

Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our team remains committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year.

Good move by Microsoft. I still play with my Xbox360 almost every day both online and offline and would hate to have to be forced to connect just to play offline games.

As for pre-ordering, no way would I do it. Every story in the world will have tons of inventory so there's no reason to pre order and besides, I would want to wait to see the games beforehand.

The xbox still isn't appealing with the kinect recording your every facial / heart beat / room sounds. That is worse than any other part of this gaming system.

Yes all good and well that you are able to find some *obscure* notation that mm refers to million. When in reality, mm is widely used and recognised as an abbreviation for millimeters

in connection with a measurement of distance

connection with a number like 50mm users.. not a measurement of distance

as is taught in school.

It was never certain that game publishers were going to use the DRM feature. They all claimed to be surprised when MS announced it.

I'm still going with PS4 because if a simple patch can apparently fix everything then who's to say they won't later down the line reintroduce their bs when people are already really invested in the system?

QFT

It's even debatable if it was a bad choice:

Shared games library, the ability to resell or trade digital content, etc.

When it's itunes or Netflix it's called innovation when it's MS shit storm. Maybe had they removed the disc tray altogether and called it the first digital only console ever it would have been better received.

Fuck XBOX, I agree with Scott McD, anyone who buys this console is an idiot, what is stopping Microsoft selling 50 million consoles then adding a new patch to bring back DRM? Once they have critical mass, they won't give a shit about losing 10-15% of their audience, when they already made billions selling this piece of shit console.

I'm a 30 year old man, my wife is pre-ordering my PS4 as my Christmas gift this year (if I wait that long!), yes there will be tons of stocks but I don't give a shit, I want to know I am guaranteed to have one, we all know the laws of supply and demand. I won't be taking any risks.

Saw their reps talk about their products on Jimmy Fallon earlier this week. Was pretty embarrassing for MS to talk about their game and the next day the Sony guys come along and all they need to say is it's cheaper, better and doesn't spy on you.

Let's consider the game share again. I don't why everything is ok now that they have back tracked, when they originally wanted to fuck people over so much in the first place ?

That's like a salesman clearly trying to rip you off for a car or something, realises you are gonna go elsewhere, then says ok i will drop the price and make it realistic and sorry about before, i just wanted to see how dumb you would be.

You still wouldn't give the guy your custom. I don't see the difference here. They intended on screwing over their loyal customers.

For me, this back track should make no difference at all...

Majority rule, Give the people what they want, not what they think they want.

People like to own what they buy, not "sort of" own it.

What would have been a better idea, is if there was an option to have the Xbox One on an always online mode so they can keep whatever innovation they are trying push.

Maybe something along the lines of "enable online mode" "disable online mode"

There's still time.
