It wasn't really an intelligent question, so it deserved a non intelligent answer.. In 40% of families with children (read single moms) Women are the primary earners. But make less than men. What does this say about society?

Pretty much says that the economy in in the shitter and families rely on two incomes. And the primary care giver and the primary bread earner can rarely co-exist.

I had to go back and re-watch the South Carolina girl video again. You're right - neither questions were that coherent. People are too idealistic!

They really need to stop asking them questions.

It's like asking a dog to meow. Doomed to fail...

That was a pretty bad moment...and so was the SoCar one from '07, but, in all fairness, because of dumbass questions.

Not a thought in her pretty little head.

Not that she needs one.

Then she hits 40 and one day wakes up in a Twilight Zone episode of her own creation.

Men can't see or hear her anymore.

The question was absolutely valid. Basically, it boiled down to "why men earn more than women".

There are no dumb questions....

So it's a tough moment and she wasn't prepared for that question. The question wasn't worded well. I probably would have choked too.

But seriously...it says we live in a Patriarchal Society dominated by male egotism and that women should recognize this and demand equal pay.

And what's so hard about answering that?
With all those bullshit lib social, and feminazi womens studies it shouldn't be hard for a girl to answer that.

It's not difficult, but I would say it was posed (perhaps deliberately) in a more complicated way than it could have been. I assume these models just have a bunch of standard responses, related to education, children, whatever, and try to relate them to whatever they get asked.

I'm not really sure what the point of the questions are; I thought these contests were about beauty not brainpower. I bet Stephen Hawking knows jack shit about how to apply foundation.

Women always want equal pay.

Then you ask them to lift something remotely heavy and they look at you as if you just asked them to push a train down the track...

I think she got stumped because she realized a "real answer" was going to stir up shit.

What was she supposed to say? "Men are sexist and discriminate against females, they
think we are stupid and sex objects and put us in stupid contest like this one".

here is the correct answer the contestant should have come up with on stage at that moment::

The shift reflects evolving family dynamics.

For one, it has become more acceptable and expected for married women to join the work force. It is also more common for single women to raise children on their own. Most of the mothers who are chief breadwinners for their families ? nearly two-thirds ? are single parents.

The recession may have played a role in pushing women into primary earning roles, as men are disproportionately employed in industries like construction and manufacturing that bore the brunt of the layoffs during the downturn. Women, though, have benefited from a smaller share of the job gains during the recovery; the public sector, which employs a large number of women, is still laying off workers.

Women?s attitudes toward working have also changed. In 2007, before the recession officially began, 20 percent of mothers told Pew that their ideal situation would be to work full time rather than part time or not at all. The share had risen to 32 percent by the end of 2012.

The public is still divided about whether it is a good thing for mothers to work. About half of Americans say that children are better off if their mother is at home and doesn?t have a job. Just 8 percent say the same about a father. Even so, most Americans acknowledge that the increasing number of working women makes it easier for families ?to earn enough to live comfortably.?

Perhaps even more tellingly, couples in which the wife earns more report less satisfaction with their marriage and higher rates of divorce. When the wife brings in more money, couples often revert to more stereotypical sex roles; in such cases, wives typically take on a larger share of household work and child care.

Of course, these patterns may change as the job market evolves. College degrees, for example, are becoming increasingly important to both finding and keeping a job. And women are more likely than men to get college degrees.

Norms are also changing: Newlyweds seem to show more openness to having the wife earn more than her husband than do longer-married couples.

The question had absolutely nothing to do with single moms.
if it didn't have anything to do with single moms, why was it pointed out that in 40% of families, women are the primary earners? Either A: there is no other parent contributing to the household income, or B: the woman earns more than her husband, which would nullify the question.

"A" doesn't necessarily mean the mom is single, her husband may simply have no job.

"B" does not rule out the mom working more hours than her husband, yet being paid less per hour.

There are millions of single parent families, but I'd be surprised if they accounted for 40%.

I don't see anything wrong with the question. She completely flubbed the answer because she is completely unfamiliar with the topic matter of the question. There was nothing insightful about what she said, just words to fill some space, while she wished for it to be over. Many of them were in the wrong order. No one votes for these girls because they're brilliant. They're hot. Who cares. She'll be rescued by some rich trout some day. Don't feel bad for her.

Nothing to do with race. Merely pointing out that the person asking the question is dumb.
