Texas executes woman, first in U.S. in nearly three years

(Reuters) - Texas on Wednesday executed by lethal injection a woman convicted of stabbing her elderly neighbor to death in 1997, the first U.S. execution of a woman in nearly three years, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said.

Kimberly McCarthy, 52, was pronounced dead at 6:37 p.m. CDT (2337 GMT) at a Texas state prison, the department said. She was convicted of killing Dorothy Booth, 71, in 1997, cutting off her ring finger and stealing a diamond ring that she then pawned.

McCarthy was the eighth person executed in Texas this year and the 500th put to death in the state since the United States restored capital punishment in 1976, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

Executions of women remain rare in the United States. Of the 1,338 inmates executed since the death penalty's reinstatement, only 13 have been women. Before McCarthy, the last woman executed was Teresa Lewis by Virginia in September 2010.

I read yesterday that she is the 500th person put to death by Texas since they reinstated the death penalty in 1982..

doesn't seem to be working either. They still have one of the highest rates of violent crime in the country.

Booth had agreed to give McCarthy a cup of sugar before she was attacked with a butcher knife at her home in Lancaster, about 15 miles south of Dallas. Authorities say McCarthy cut off Booth?s finger to remove her wedding ring.

McCarthy indicted but never tried in the December 1988 deaths of two other elderly women. Maggie Harding was stabbed and bludgeoned with a meat tenderizer. Jettie Lucas, 85, was beaten with a claw hammer and stabbed with a knife

My main issue with execution/abortions is that once the kid is born the conservatives trying to band abortion don't give a shit about the baby. "ok, you're born... now you're on your own."

It took 17 years to execute her?? IMO if the appeals process was done, they should have juiced her ass the following day... Waste of tax dollars keeping her ass alive and housed in prison for that long..

Did I say that they should have or should not have seeked the death penalty in the beginning? No... But if she's up for death penalty the costs are already there, so why house her for an unnecessary length of time beyond what is legally required.. it's not lik the governor was going to be calling and giving her clemency..

I'm well aware of the costs of trail for lifetime improsonment vs. trial for death penalty.. the cost of a death penalty case is much much higher..

but my point is, why keep her there so long after the appeals process should be over.. she's already going to cost money, why make it even more money...

I wonder why the US decided lethal injection and electric chair were the best ways of executing someone. I mean it's shown those cost more than imprisoning someone for life, which is one of the arguments against it. Couldn't they make that argument meaningless if they made the new execution policy to be death by firing squad? Would be a whole lot cheaper and I think it's more humane than the current methods.

Death by firing squad also requires training courses for those who will be firing the shots, then not to mention grief counseling and such if a corrections officer feels sad because he wonders if he fired the fatal bullet etc.. there are costs in all of it regardless of the angle..

I wouldn't have a problem with speeding up the process so long as we modified the system so that either side can't stand in the way of evidence. There are a lot of cases where either the prosecution or defense fight to not have evidence entered int the record because it either doesn't help their case or outright hurts it. In many cases they will fight to exclude DNA evidence.

In some of these cases, years and many appeals later, that DNA evidence proves the person is innocent. I just don't want to see us executing innocent people for the sake of saving a few dollars.

To me the death penalty is nothing more than a political tool. It simply does not work as a deterrent and it is expensive. Elected officials want it to they can prove they are tough on crime. It is an easy way for them to get votes.

Now I think that's letting them off easy. Fuck that. Feed them bread and water for the next forty years, and let them live in fear no knowing when they'll be raped and ass fucked.

Yep. I watch a lot of Lockup, so many of them place no value on life, including their own so death penalty is an easy out.

I think there should be some sort of manufacturing or farming at prisons. Let them be productive and let some of the money go to restitution and other to contribute toward the cost of their incarceration. Those accepted and who play by the rules get a bit better menu than general pop
