They did the same thing after Hurricane Katrina. The National Guard went door to door taking legal weapons from their owners.

The ironic thing is, people get weapons to protect themselves during tikes like that when others may be looting or inflicting harm on others, and that is when the weapons are taken from them. Doesn't make a God damned bit of sense.

You should either be allowed to have them or not. None of this in-between nonsense where they can take them from you during an emergency where God forbid you may actually need them.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper's office is urging the RCMP in High River, Alta., to focus on "more important" tasks and to return the guns officers took from homes while searching for victims in the evacuated flood zone.

Harper's office issued a statement Friday morning in quick reaction to the news that the RCMP had taken some firearms that they said weren't stored properly in empty homes.

"If any firearms were taken, we expect they will be returned to their owners as soon as possible," the statement said. "We believe the RCMP should focus on more important tasks such as protecting lives and private property."

"We are expressing our view," a spokesman for Harper, Carl Vallee, said in an email when asked for comment about the statement.

The RCMP would not comment on the PMO's suggestions, and a spokesman for the High River detachment said the RCMP were acting in the interest of public safety.

"When RCMP officers were going door-to-door searching each residence for potential victims, we did come across a couple of residences where there were some firearms that were left insecure," Cpl. Darrin Turnbull told CBC News in an interview.

"In those situations, when they were out in plain view and they were not properly secured and stored, those firearms were taken by the RCMP member and safely secured in the High River detachment."

The PM of Canada is a conservative, so that explains his comments to appeal to his voters.

If guns are left on a kitchen counter in an evacuated home, is it not responsible of them to do something about it? It doesn't appear like they were on some kind of gun hunt..

Kids shoot themselves all the time, and responsible gun owners like they always profess to be, should take this little embarrassing slap on the wrist for not storing their guns safely.

Also you have to figure looting could be a problem, home invasions, etc.. Guns being left out in the open is obviously less than ideal.

For a long gun to be safely stored in canada all you need is a trigger lock. I keep a shotgun in my bedroom with a trigger lock. Who wants to bet it would have been gone if the police entered. They probably took every gun that wasn't in a locked cabinet or safe.

Your point is what? Guns were taken from legal gun owners. They were authorized to take the guns by force if necessary. I just can't understand that. Illegal gun owners, sure, take them. But legal gun owners... that will never make sense to me.

Criminals were looting homes and LEGAL gun owners had their firearms taken from them when they actually needed them the most. Where is the logic in that?

If the courts can order a cease and desist anytime they want, then the right to bare arms is a moot point. That means you can play with your toys until you actually need them, then you'll hand them over to mommy and daddy like a good little boy because playtime is over.

also, i think if you look, you will find that the order to confiscate firearms after katrina was not an order issued from the top, it was lower-level people who gave that order, it was also stopped after it was revealed to be an illegal command.

The courts made it clear that taking the weapons was illegal and ordered the immediate return of the weapons. The next time around people may be more reluctant to meekly turn over their weapons.
