Britain has officially legalised gay marriage after Queen Elizabeth II gave her royal assent to a bill approved by both houses of parliament, paving the way for the first same-sex weddings to take place next year.

Good.

It's a long time coming for the 21st century.

Fingers crossed Australia takes gay marriage to the election in a few months. It's important for things like this to be real issues instead of sideline concepts and ideas.

I want my gays married, my energy renewable and my Internet fast.

Arnox- It is looking like Rudd's Labor is gearing up to make the youth vote a core part of their campaign, Rudd has already announced his personal support and called on Abbott to at least allow a conscience vote. Given current numbers a conscience vote would pass legalising gay marriage. Currently the ASP membership is sitting between the Nationals and One Nation, and given we missed out on a seat at the last election by such a small margin, the larger parties will be wanting to court ASP preferences. Gay marriage stance will be a high priority when considering where preferences should go.

Actually current numbers would see a defeat if both sides had a conscience vote, the ALP already had a conscience vote the last time it was put to Parliament.

A new Parliament may shift things somewhat, however if Parliament were recalled today and a conscience vote held then on current numbers it would be narrowly defeated.

What was most disappointing in the whole process were the views of so many of the prominent Lib Dem MPs.

I have spent a lot of time in Australia and I have found that it seems to be swinging further to the right every year...

I wouldn't be surprised if AK is correct....

That's a disappointment? the Lib Dems are a joke, they are a spent force with not idea of what the people want - remember, this is the party that wants to give all illegal immigrants an amnesty. An idea that popular only amongst the enrichers.
