Wouldn't mind being able to play guitar or piano though...

I started playing the ukelele in Hawaii as a little kid, and by age 10 was playing guitar, which I still play daily. I've taken the odd lesson here and there, but for the most part, I'm self-taught and learned most of what I know by watching and trying to imitate other players.

I've subsequently taught myself banjo and mandolin too over the years. I'm not that good, and have only written two songs in decades of playing, but I get immense joy from playing musical instruments nonetheless.

12 years of piano lessons growing up and I hated every minute of it.

I can still play, but not like I did.

Guitar for nearly 4 decades. Trained classical and years of Jazz theory..and then just played with a lot of different bands over the years.

Banjo, I have enough stuff down for 1 set..
Piano...less than one set.
And I can play violin well enough to not make you want to shoot me.

DynaMo.. It arrived today.

I'm glad you didn't ask "what musical instruments do you play well?" because while I play guitar without taking lessons, it doesn't mean it's any good.

If I had a drum kit (and a home studio with soundproofing) I'd be wailing on it all day long after work.

Took piano lessons as a youngster as did a few of my brothers.

that song kicks ass! i'm really liking the guitar rock that *appears*? to be emerging right now.

i've come across several ukelele covers on youtube that were fantastic, it's entirely diffeent from the guitar, playing-wise right? or nor?

isn't it amazing? it's a great hobby (and more) that's very rewarding and demanding all at the same time.

Drums, 13 years. I no longer play. I was self taught or as they called it back then "play by ear" and I did take a few lessons when I first started, then bailed on the instructor.

When anything gets you down, there is nothing like a musical instrument to soothe you, to help you confront your demons, or simply to escape.

Ukelele is relatively easy to learn since it only has four strings. However, as with anything it can be simple or complex...

Check out Jake Shimabukoro (one of my favorite recent uke players):

What is a trip, is that mandolin tuning is nearly identical to violin tuning (there are extra strings tuned an octave higher on a mandolin). It's fun fucking around on a violin playing it like a mandolin (my classical musician friends crack up when I show them how I play the violin).

The reverse is interesting too:

Now you know why mandolins and violins sound so nice together:

my mom was / still is a professional as in paid musician. there were many musical instruments around the house when I was growing up. the only lessons I took were for piano and music theory. but I was self taught on woodwinds and guitar. lame at violin. have no desire to play anything anymore. sex is more enjoyable than blowing, bowing, fingering or strumming

cello, upright bass, electric guitar, electric bass, but my main focus is percussion

I also did a lot of electronic music production using midi keyboards but I cant really claim to play the piano with any proficiency

I am really good at playing the Triangle. I first learned of the instrument when I was in 10th grade and fortunately the music teacher let me into the program even though it had already started. Learning the Triangle changed my life.

When I was 20 I tried to start a 1-man triangle band and even demo'ed at a view live venues here in Montreal such as the Peel Pub showbar when it was open. Sadly the owners said they weren't interested.

Today there is little music featuring the triangle, but I still like to play. You should hear my all-triangle version of Enter Sandman. Come to our booth at the Qwebec Expo and maybe I'll jam.

Too bad I'm not going to QE, we could have done a uke and triangle duet of Enter Sandman...

Started playing guitar, teaching myself Classical guitar, from books, when I was about 8.... then moved to rock and folk by the time I was about 12 and also started singing. Never had any lessons, but I would practice about 3 hours a day. Then got into a rock band when I was 17. In and out of bands until I was about 22, and then I became a Recording Engineer in L.A. That kept me so busy, and so involved in music that I basically stopped practicing. Now, many years later, I pick up one of my guitars maybe a couple of times a month. It's frustrating to see how much I lost from my peak, so many chops, so many songs.... But it's still fun to jam with friends once in a while.

Today there is little music featuring the triangle, but I still like to play. You should hear my all-triangle version of Enter Sandman. Come to our booth at the Qwebec Expo and maybe I'll jam.
i've been thinking of picking up the triangle but musical instruments can be so daunting sometimes. would get a kick outta hearing your chops man!

think about that
