If there are no dealerships then how do you get the car serviced? What about warranty issues?

Looks like it has less to with oil, and it's more about useless car dealers feeling cut out by the new car sales paradigm they're trying to promote. And yes, car dealers are are about as useless as someone pumping your gas. Get rid of the entire profession.

that's how they're already sold in texas, there is no ban on them, the title is misleading, in fact they have 2 show rooms in texas already. they show them the cars in the showroom and they buy the car online and it is delivered to them.

I love when business owners scream about wanting a free market, until someone figures out how to do it better than they are then suddenly they want everyone to play by the same rules.

I think people are so fed up with the oil and gas companies...they're willing to take a good look at alternative electric cars - if only just to spite the oil industry for ripping us off all this time.

I wonder what the Tesla's battery performance is in a typical Canadian winter. What does that 300mi. per charge dwindle to when the thermometer hits -20c?

There's an app for that.

Plug your Tesla into a smartphone...diagnose...pick up the parts at Radio Shack or BestBuy.

Its not the oil companies, apparently its the N.A.D.A who are banding together. There are protections in place that prevent Auto Companies from selling directly to the consumer thus undercutting the Dealership Franchisee. Tesla argues that since it has never had, or plans to franchise the selling of their cars, it doesn't apply to them. That argument has been successful for them so far in court.

I think that the dealerships are worried that if Tesla's model does prove successful, it will spur other automakers to lobby to get the laws changed.

Thanks for thinking of me!

And no it doesn't make me flip out. It is kind of expected from Texas.

Then again I watched the video, and the guy being interviewed seemed to kinda sorta have a point. Maybe what Tesla is doing IS a violation of franchise laws. I've never read them so I don't know. The simple answer might be that big oil has a hand in this, but maybe this time, just maybe, it is against a law. Who knows...

I hope Tesla wins though.

There's no dealerships, but there are service centers at their "Galleries". You can go to a Tesla Gallery to see the cars but you don't buy them there because they aren't a "dealership". You only look at new cars and get your current car serviced.

There's already 1 service center here in Montreal (actually, Laval), with actual galleries coming next spring I read.

at -10 Degrees the batteries deliver 70% power at start up. Built-in battery warmers can be turned on ahead of time to boost this. After driving the batteries automatically warm up bring available power up to 100%. No idea what happens at -20 or -30 though...

Then again, here's an awesome video of a Tesla Roadster in the snow.

The roadster is the smaller sportier car that Tesla had a couple of years ago. This isn't a Model S. I would assume though that the Model S does better.

That. is. Freaking. AWESOME!

I've seen 2 Tesla's here in Montreal, along with about 5 Chevy Volt's and 1 Chrome Karma (Fisker?).

I'm test-driving a Tesla on Thursday. Electric is awesome. My Camaro is for sale.

Cool! Just found this.

In a drag race, a supercharged Camaro beats a Tesla Model S, but only by 0.4 seconds. Amazing.

ironic that the home state of republican free market whores prevents an auto maker from selling cars as they see fit.

you can build a roller coaster in your backyard. but you can't build a car & sell it directly to anyone.

Texas seems to be the hotbed of trying things and finding out that maybe they don't work as well as they thought they would.

There was the case where they defunded planned parenthood, cut funding for contraception and sex education in schools and now find themselves facing a boom of unplanned pregnancies. Another sweet one is a Texas mega church is suddenly reversing its position on vaccination when 21 of their members suddenly got the measles.

NO Republican wants less govt.
They are the same as the Democrats these days.

That's why I became a registered Libertarian in 2012

I want freedom and a small unobtrusive govt.

Both Democrats and Republicans want the govt. to be in charge of your personal life.

The difference is that republicans say they want less government and somehow convince people that they actually mean it at the same time they actually grow the government while democrats basically tell you more government is good.

My personal opinion is that if you are a registered republican you are part of the problem. If you are a registered democrat you are part of the problem.

They both use an illusion...The Republicans (as you said) claim they want less govt., and then turn around and pass every law they can think of to force you to do what they want.

The Dems try to pretend that they are "liberal" and don't want the govt. in your bedroom. So they give the illusion that they are the "smart" ones who want to just be "cool".
Then Obama turns around and has the NSA spying, the IRS targeting, goes after more "whistleblowers" than any administration in history, and of course FORCES the entire country to buy health insurance whether they want or need it.

You're right... a pox on both their houses.

It's like pro wrestling. They give the illusion that they are "foes". But in reality...they are both just pretending to play a role. The real end game is power. And there's not any difference between them.
They just have different cronies that they are sucking up to.

One thing that has always amazed me is how both parties can repackage the same lies and crap over and over again and continue to resell it to the same people and those people are willing to buy it over and over again. It is almost as if they say, "Well, they have lied to us the last 20 times, but this time I believe them."

What also bugs me is when people talk about having to choose the lesser of two evils, which, sadly, is often the reality. If those people would just vote for a third party candidate we would have a third party in this country.

as a footnote: other countries simply have both - franchise dealerships and in big cities the big companies (like VW, BMW etc) have sometimes their own showrooms where they also sell cars.

i think there are some new bills introduced that allow electric cars to zip past the franchise laws in tx.

new york had the same issue, it was sorted out in that state, i suspect texans won't get a hitch in their giddyup either and pass the laws

BINGO!!!

Exactly....

And yet STILL people around here buy into the paradigm of "Republicans bad, Democrats good", or "Democrats bad, Republicans good". Such blind loyalty to parties that are both completely screwing us over in utterly equal measures with the same self-serving goals.

Pathetic.

You are full of shit.

Your ignorance is fucking astounding.

I was a Democrat because of their stated social views...but now I'm a Libertarian.

I believe in small govt. that works FOR the people. I believe in an individuals freedom.

The only person in denial is someone who is IGNORANT like you.

You clearly don't have a clue what you are about on this subject. No offense meant but you couldn't be more wrong here. Both him and Justin Amash have voted against Republican party lines MUCH more then they ever voted with them. Don't rely on political pundits for your info, look up the congressional voting records. They are online.

Not only that...but Ron Paul is NOT a Libertarian.

He's "close" I guess. But he's not for what the Libertarian party stands for.

Or as Libertarian Pres. candidate Gary Johnson said: "I'm 'Pro-Everything'"

Ron Paul? He's against abortion. He's against people being able to decide for themselves if they want to use recreational drugs. And despite the things he said about cutting back the govt., we would STILL have a huge govt. involved in our lives from cradle to grave.

A real Libertarian doesn't accept Ron Paul as a Libertarian at all.

He's "close". But not in the ways that really matter to me.

And "close" only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. lol

It would be like taking a RINO Republican from the NorthEast and trying to tell Democrats that he's "really" a Democrat.
Nope.

Or taking a "conservative" Democrat and trying to tell Republicans he's "really" a Republican.
Nope.

Ron Paul isn't a Libertarian. That's just a tag that his political opponents put on him to make him look unacceptable to their bible thumping base.

I wonder what the Tesla's battery performance is in a typical Canadian winter. What does that 300mi. per charge dwindle to when the thermometer hits -20c?
-10°C that might drop to about 260km
-20°C that might drop to about 200km
-30°C that might drop to about 150km

Excellent points, except for the Abortion issue. There are many splits in the libertarian party that disagree on the abortion side of things, based on the thought that the view of a minarchist government would always still include protecting people from other people that would do harm to them, and that would include protecting viable children that happen to be in the womb. Not based on any religious silliness, but rather on an individuals right to not be killed by another person.

What I know for sure is that Gary Johnson (the Libertarian candidate in 2012) is as he said "pro-choice for everything".

And his stated stance on abortion is "women's right to choose up until fetal viability"

To me, I always liked what the Dems claimed in their social stances and what the Republicans claimed in their fiscal stance.
But neither party ever delivers in modern times.

The Libertarian party is the best of both worlds. They are TRULY socially free. And they are TRULY fiscally responsible.

That's why both the Republican and Democrat Party machinination tries to paint them as "crazy".
Yep, in 2013 it's "crazy" to think that people can actually be free.

Of course not Richard.

Individuals don't have a "right" to kill somebody. Or steal. Rape. etc.

But the Libertarian party does indeed recognize a woman's right to choose.

I wish more people would have educated themselves about the party in the last election.

There is a reason that Congress and the State legislators have passed so many election laws that pretty much keep third party candidates OUT of the race.

They don't want the American people to hear their messages.

Gary Johnson should have been onstage during the Presidential debates. How can people even know about him if he is not allowed (by rules that the Republican and Democrat National Committee held hands on to implement) to even be there?

The entire country got a small series of debates that only had Obama and Romney.

Making it appear that was the ONLY choices.

Goodbye, Old Butters. Hello, New Butters.

So I just came back from test driving a Tesla Model S, and

Holy
Fucking
Shitsnacks.

This car is out of this world. I don't care what kind of a gas-loving gear-headed oil-drinker you are, you HAVE to try one of these cars out yourself and at least consider making it your next car.

The Tesla location in Laval is a service station with about 7 Model S's on the lot. When I got there the sales rep was super friendly and took the time to show me the exterior of the car including the "Frunk" (awesome!). The car is super sleek and sexy and conservative in its styling.

But who cares about that. The real fun is inside.

The car's door handles automatically extend outward as I approach the car. When I get in the air conditioner is already on. As I sit my ass down the dash lights up. No keys except for a Keyfob I kept in my pocket.

The dash is all electronic. No out-dated mechanical gauges. A giant 17" multi-touch sensitive screen to my right is showing me endless data, status indicators, graphs and charts and maps and even an Internet browser for fucksakes. Perfectly positioned and angled and comfortable as hell to use even while driving.

To "Start" the car, you step on the brake, and move a lever sticking from the right hand side of the steering colum to "D" to drive or "R" to reverse. Thats it! No Engine to start. No rumble to life. Just ____________________ silence.

I take it out on the road. Fast. Responsive. Exactly what you would expect. The steering feels a little too wide / luxurious for me but hey - no problem. I press "Config" then then "Sport" on the touch screen and now the turning radius is shorter and the steering stiffer. Nice. You can even adjust the car's suspension and height from the ground, or let it adjust automatically based on how fast you are going. Imagine that! Via SOFTWARE, you can place your card in sport mode when you want to have fun, and standard mode when you just want to cruise.

After about 15 minutes of driving around and taking it easy I gun it. Well, I don't gun it, but I step on the "gas" pedal to see what it can do, and HOLY FUCKING SHIT THIS CAR IS FAST!!!

I can't emphasize this enough. It is not "fast" for an electric car. It's not "fast" for a V6 gas car. It's not "fast" for a super charged V8. It's F A S T! The acceleration is disturbingly, scary fast. When they say "Instant Torq", I now know what they mean. On the highway I kept slowing down to gain as much distance as I could from the slowpokes ahead of me then gunned the "gas" again and again. SICK FAST! and SO FUN!

Seriously. Forget whatever negative thoughts you have about Tesla or electric cars. No matter what you think, you are completely wrong. The Tesla Model S, and the upcoming model X are the future of cars that are actually here today, that you can actually buy, and without spending alot of money. And the best thing is, after driving around all that time I didn't even put a dent in its battery. I didn't once worry about driving distance, and just laughed as I drove past the gas stations selling fuel at $1.42 per litre. Fuck you, Gas, fuck you.

TESLA : AWESOME!

I've wanted one for years now.

I want the little roadster.

Problem is I have my Prowler. And it's the last year they were made (2002). And it's so unique that I don't want to sell it.

I have my Jeep that we use for grocery-getting

And I just bought a Fiat 500 for my teenage daughter's 16th birthday.

So to get another car just because I want to...would be a complete waste.

I actually contacted them about 6 years ago to see if they could or would replace my Prowlers gas engine with a Tesla electric motor. But they told me real fast that they do not do that at all.
