They've been around for a long time. I never watched them either until my brother twisted by arm a couple of years ago. Excellent show. Not sure where you are yet but the best one in my opinion is "Closer to the heart".

It's a Canadian show that was never aired in the US, so the only way to see it was streaming or DVD. I heard a bit ago that the show was gonna be back in production again.
