New Laptop - What would you recommend?

It's time for a new laptop. My old Vaio is getting too old. What would you recommend.

Looking for Windows
Great processor, Hard drive and RAM
Needs to be pretty durable
Reasonable price

I was looking at a HP Envy 17, thoughts?

I got an HP G7 about a year ago. It is a little less powerful than the Envy, but it is about $500 less as well.

If you don't mind spending the money the Envy is nice, but at that price point there are a ton of options so I guess it would depend on what you plan to use it for. If you want to also play games on it then the Envy or something like it with good video is a good choice. There are others out there with less graphics but more processor speed and HD space or other configurations.

As for HP as a brand, my only complaint was that it came with a ton of extra crap software installed. I had to spend the first few hours I owned it getting rid of all that junk.

From some of what I've heard, HP has stepped up their game from recent years. For a while you were getting something not as high quality with crappy support to boot.

The fact that you mention durability makes me think of lenovo. They're pretty sturdy if I'm thinking right. I'd recommend checking out Asus also. Finally, check out the forums over at notebookreview.com for info about the various options out there.

Edit: As another poster pointed out, it also helps us to know exactly what you want in a notebook. Since you mentioned a 17inch, I'm guessing you'd prefer a more powerful "desktop replacement" type of notebook.

If you're going to be portable with it, check out the asus ux31a with SSD, this bad boy starts up in less than 10 seconds from a cold boot and haven't had a single problem with mine running windows 8.

I just picked up the HP Envy, I'm very happy with it. My last 3 laptops have been HP you really can't go wrong. I7 Quad, just make sure you max out the memory.

If I was buying something new right now I would go for the ASUS top gaming line, GX something. But it will not work if you need to move it around a lot since it's pretty hefty and bulky.

I did want a Lenovo until I read about the Chinese / FBI whatever putting backdoors in them..

Macbook Pro, hands down. The build quality is top-notch, and support is borderline fanatical. $3,500 seems like a very small amount when you don't have to worry about anything.

I just got the Hp touchsmart 11-E010NR. Pretty cheap, but light, great touchscreen, good battery, and I just love it so far. I've been a toshiba fan for years, but I heard that HP is really coming back, so I bought this one, and so far, I'm really happy with it.

not the U one, the only machine that can compare with a macbook for non apple users

costs a lil bit, but im so pissed since i swapped to lenovo that i regret it every minute
and i only do not swap back cause im going to have to reinstall thousands of proggies

I have an HP Envy 15 that I got over 2 years ago.

The build quality if the best in the PC world I have seen. Great screen as well. I can recommend that line fully. I have no problems with it and I can see keeping it for at least a couple of more years.

Go for it!

Samsung Chronos 7 Series are great including Core i7 quadcore, SSD, Blueray, anti glare display and anything else you need. They boot Win 8 in about 3 seconds.

They're all good. If you look at a laptop with the same specs, any brand will do, doesn't matter.
Only specific spec i was looking for was a backlit keyboard, amazed that it's not a standard yet. Got an HP myself (with backlit keyboard ofcourse;))

Well I ordered one yesterday. Ended up going for the HP Envy 17 even though I was telling myself I wouldn't and it was too much to spend.
I haven't got it yet though, the store had to order it in, hopefully I should be able to pick it up over the weekend or early next week.

Can't wait to have a play with the bad boy.

My last few computers have been made by ASUS and I have been extremely happy with them, they were all laptops/netbooks though. I always build by own desktops and I use ASUS motherboards in them also.

You made a good choice. You will not regret it. You will be able to play the latest games, render video, and more all at the same time with that bad boy.

You will also be shocked at the build quality. Best of the non apple computer builds hands down!

Enjoy

never buy a Dell again, and I've had 3. I bought a top of the line Studio series, very pricey, it was intended to be a "Gaming" laptop, and the motherboard overheats everytime I watch a video or play a game, and the whole laptop shuts down instantly with no warning.
I'll never buy another Dell again.

While I agree with the comments on most of the chromebooks, their newest one the Pixel looks to be a bit better.
