GFY peeps how many of you get *THAT* Look from your neighbors

Don't act or pretend you don't know which got damn look I am talking about!

You know damn well that look of disgust and hostility from your neighbor because they leave out for work at 8:30 am every morning and they come home at 5:30 pm in the afternoon wiped the fuck out.

There you are Mr. & Mrs. Gfy John and Jane Doe

Sitting there with your vehicle in the same spot all day and full of energy and upon your neighbors return from work they break their routine for a split second to glance over at you with slanted and perched eye brows with a slightly audible sound of suck teeth.

Then you say hey how's it going today....and they respond..."Just tired some people have to work for a living"

Then you reply "hey I feel your pain there is never enough rest for us weary folk" as you suggest to them that you can identify with their pain.

Then one final and persuasive time they slowly whip there head back around and look at you with that *LOOK*

That unmistakeable...LOOK....you know like you are an abomination for not having to leave the comfort of your home and face the elements to punch the clock.

I know I am not the only one who is a regular recipient of the *LOOK*

Well... I've had the misfortune of registering domain with my real name.

My name is very unique, only one in the US, unfortunately, up to not too long ago you could google my name and some of my affiliate domains would pop up with very graphic terms.

The other stupid thing I did was form an LLC that was called Johnny Load Productions (sounds suspicious).

I pride myself in being able to read people deeply, and some people it spooks a lot when they find out.
I had one girl in a class that just randomly dropped close to the beginning as my lab partner because I hosted sites themed around women getting copious amounts of jizz on their face!
Something I really get off on!

Anyway, I work out of my house.
People get confused by it, if they do I just tell them that I sit on my ass all day!
When I tell people about how it works in a longer conversation they often become intrigued and start THINKING about running their own business/freelancing services.
No commute (good for the enviroment and that's time I can spend working)
As long as you are disciplined, it's the way to go.

happens all the time, but usually not from the neighbors though .. just random people that assume I must not have a job because I can go to supermarket 2PM in the afternoon, or go for a run or workout when other people are at work

I've got into jogging on and off and lately I'm up in the mornings doing a run while my neighbours are driving away for work. Wave hello, etc...

At the end of the day just around sunset I'm in the park flying my Parrot AR Drone around and the same neighbours pull in looking tired and pissed off mostly due to the traffic they have to sit through.

They hate me.

I get that look at all the time around my place.. They also know I do porn so I have a couple neighbors w/ kids that are the most odd. I generally just keep to myself and do not interact with any of them.

I have two very different neighbors. One of them works for a company doing installs of servers and other networking stuff. His company will send him away for a job then he gets time off when he gets back. So he might be gone for 2-3 weeks then come home and be off for a week. He knows what I do and thinks it is cool.

The other neighbor is an older lady who is retired. When I first moved in she was very nice. She brought me cookies on the holidays, she would talk to me all the time and was a nice person to live next to. Then I started dating an Asian girl. To make it worse, she is an Asian girl with a full back tattoo so my neighbor now doesn't speak to me because she doesn't believe in interracial dating and she is convinced the GF is a criminal.

I often laugh when I think about her because the guy that works for the networking company is gay. He is open about and flies the rainbow flag sometimes. The older lady hates that. She wrote the local paper when he moved in saying that she was concerned that the gays were taking over. So now she just bunkers up to keep away from the horrible gay and the hoodlum Asian girl.

I find external family worst, not close family but like Aunt's etc - they think you don't actually work!

Besides i keep my lawn better then theirs. I hand pick weeds, and at my last home i even hand picked my neighbours as we had adjoining lawns.

I used to, I lived in a posh city apartment block, neighbours were Doctors/Lawyers. So they used to wonder, but I told them I design databases. Its the perfect thing to say, kills a conversation dead.

We have been very upfront with them how we earn money online ... but it falls on deaf ears. Because we do not go out to a 40 hour/week job ..... we don't work!

When I moved from Scotland to Canada I rented out my house, one of my neighbours came over to say hi to the new tenant and kindly informed him that it was "good to see the back of that last guy who lived here" My tenant asked why and his response was "He was a drug dealer, never left the house and had a BMW parked in the driveway all day long"

The kicker to the story, the new tenant was my kid brother who, up until 2 years before that, had lived with me and my neighbour saw him often. My brother politely informed him that I was his brother and certainly not a drug dealer. I found it funny, I make sure I wave to him anytime I go home and visit my brother.

Great thread and great responses, I read and chuckled at all of your responses and it seems we can all relate to the misguided mindset that produces that disdainful look, simply because we punch our own clock from within the comforts of our own homes. I've lived in lower middle class neighborhoods and noticed not that many people go to a job everyday. Then I moved to a middle class area and noticed most do go to work all day. Then moving to an upper class neighborhood I once again notice most do not do the 9-5 grind, most are either independently wealthy, business owners, and/or work from home.

I think it depends a lot upon the neighbourhood. I rarely (never) get 'the look' cuz a lot of my neighbours work odd hours or from home, in the suburbs I imagine there's probably far higher concentrations of resentful 9-5ers. The only person I get that look from is my partner, when he's trudging out into the cold at 8am and I'm all curled up on the couch with my computer.

My neighbor runs a small online business where he resells military gear. Once a week he takes his huge pick up to customs where he gets a pallet of supplies - back packs, alice gear, tens, sleeping bags, etc... And then he sells them all one at a time via ebay. Every day he ships two or three dozen small boxes. He tells me he doesn't make much, but it's enough for him not to have a real job.

We don't really have neighbors, since we have acreage out of town. But, I still lease an office to keep all of our stuff out of the house, so I still go to work every day, albeit whenever I feel like it.

Yes, I've gotten 'the look', but more often than that I've gotten the "Damn, I wish I could work from home". You can try and convince them they actually CAN work from home but mostly I've found that to be a waste of time. Too many people have the J-O-B mentality and can't (won't) get out of it. Thus they have no business giving me, you, or anyone else the look, they chose their rut, and what's worse... choose to remain in it.

Sara, most "normal" people are not home from 9-5 so if you minimize your exposure during those hours you'll fit right in. Not exactly a bright idea to go outside and wash your car in the driveway at 11:30 or check the mailbox at 2pm wearing flip flops and a tshirt. Fit it, blend in, garage that car. etc. By the way if your neighbors are home during the same daylight hours as you makes you wonder what they're into

I didn't read all of the replies....but...that being said.
Here in Vegas, that doesn't (or would rarely) happen, becuse we're a 24 hour city, with varying shifts of work to keep things rolling.

BUT...since I work from home, and am not out and about all of the time, I do sometimes get a "who the hell is he?", look...even though I have been in the same place for ten years, LOL! But, that has more to do with, I keep to myself, and don't WANT to know neighbors and stuff...so they don't get too "neighborly" and "drop by out of nowhere"...

My neighbors probably wonder why they see me heading our for a walk with my dog, when they're heading off to work. Then they come home later and I'm just returning from the gym. They never ask me about it, but they don't realize that I could be working for 2 hours on one day, then I'll have to stay up 3 days straight. Or maybe I take a week off, then go non stop for 2 months.

Making my own hours rules ---- and I could never plug back into the 9 to 5 matrix.
