Who here will describe what it's like being born rich...

any silver spooners want to cut the act that you earned every cent through hard work and determination? What about you Minte - were you born with the Lambo keys?

seems like every one of my rich friends that inherited their wealth always act like they ground their knuckles to the bone to get there, would be refreshing to hear someone just come clean.

Growing up I went to school with two kids that were from very well off families. I grew up in a small town so it was no secret that their families had a lot of cash. One of the kids was an absolute dick. His grandpa made the money by buying up a huge chunk of the land around the town when it first started to grow. Now much of what is the center of town is on his land and it is leased out to the building owners. The grandpa was no longer alive when I was in high school so this kids dad ran it and he made a habit of raising the rent all the time and suing people on a regular basis. His son, who was a grade below me, walked around like he owned the town and often referred to it as "his town."

The other kid was actually pretty cool. His dad made his money with a trucking and logging company. In high school this kid did drive a 70's era Corvette, but he was actually a good guy. My understanding is that when he got out of school he started working for his dad on the bottom rung. His dad wanted him to learn the business from the ground up.

This is the classic "My dad made me get a paper route when I was 12...I started at the bottom rung in the mail room" but the more you hear it's apparent all school debts paid by daddy, loans co-signed for, trust funds established.. blue blood runs in your veins and you're set from your first gasp after you slime your way outta momma.

This is clear example how parenting, education and real/bad values produce good and bad shit on this planet.

I am far from rich but do owe everything I have to a $75,000 loan I got from my grandfather, thru my father when I was 23. I did pay back $125,000 within 2 years.

Paying the loan back was expected. The interest I insisted. On the other hand my brother and sister both graduated from college and their education bills were never paid back nor expected to be paid back. Go figure.

I hate to disappoint, but my first car was a 1960 VW Beetle that I paid $200 for. And I did deliver papers as a kid to earn it. I can thank the US Army for a good jumpstart in my career. Along with the solid work ethic and respect for the chain of command that I got from that experience I also got to use the GI bill for college.

I have known a few rich people/families in the past - It seems to me that it just means that when things are hard - IE now - Their problems are bigger than us poor people;-)...

I might struggle to pay a modest bill some months - They have bills that would make your eyes water that they struggle to pay - A lot of old money is tied up in property that often can't be touched.....

There are a lot of huge estates in the UK that have been turned into theme parks so that the 'super rich' owners can pay the bills...

This is just his feeble attempt to troll me. My guess is that because he has not been able to achieve any real earnings he finds it impossible to believe anyone else could.

And that in itself is humorous being posted at GFY. I think back over the years at how many extremely successful people have come and gone through here. I can't think of a single one of them whose father passed on the thriving porn business.

But you took over your daddy's established business, which pretty much ensured you would do well in life.

That's not true. And you can type it as many times as you need to and it still won't be true.
I realize that the same basic concept holds true for you as it does the OP. So I won't rehash the history of my business again.

Did Lightspeed inherit his success? How about every other person you have worked for in the last decade..All golden spoons. Did any of them actually work for it?

I would guess the percentage of people propelling a "family" business to a large corporation is minute vs the number who run them into the ground.

Just because you take over daddy's business doesn't mean you will succeed. A lot of hate in this thread for sure.

none of the trust-fund babies i've ever known (southern silver spooners) ever got the keys to the family business- none. they were too coddled to handle that sort of responsibility.

that's a true trustfund baby, they just call up grandma and tell her how much they need/want, cash, cars, trips, whatever. none had any moxie or gumption whatsoever.

someone who thinks taking over an established business is somehow a walk in the park and guaranteed success really has no idea wtf they're talking about.

A very good friend of mine that I met working years ago grew up EXTREMELY well off. His dad has a net worth about $50m ... All from being a serious player in investments.. .

My friend - I'd never have known he came from cash. Totally down to earth, worked hard, lived like a regular working stiff. Only later when he would have the whole crew up to his parents estate did people realize that these folks have far more paper than the average joe and he still was just one of the guys.....

Last year his father and mother were both diagnosed with terminal cancer. He has already been given a pretty large pile of cash from his parents.. However, like a lot of us, he just wants his parents to be healthy and enjoy life... When we talk, his line of you know what its like to know you never have to work again or worry about money again but you have to trade the life of your parents to get it? ... Its really sad to see him being put thru hell.

Being rich is nice to pay the bills and have a level of comfort ... Just don't forget to keep your feet on the ground in reality.

I'm not singlimg out anyone or not sure who he's referrimg to but I've seen my fair share of supposedly successful businessman who play it off like there are some alpha business genius and in reality they got a half a 300k dollar loan from their parents to start a business.

it just pathetic to live a lie like that...

That's awesome. Congrats.

How much concern does a plastic company have these days for the chemicals used in their plastics? About two years ago I started noticing the recycle numbers on the plastics in the food / drink products I buy, and how some of them are harmful, contain BPA and so on. Curious what a plastic owners view is on the harmful stuff?

the fact is there's definately classes in this country and every country and it's very difficult to break out of those classes.

From generation to generation most people stay in class where they started.

for one thing if you're busy working to pay the bills it's really difficult to learn new things and start new endeavors let alone have the money to do it.

I personally have advanced myself but I don't think I've actually change classes even though I my gross annual revenue is close to 7 figures I'm still a working man and I don't see that changing like I did when I was a bright eyed 20 yr old.

Thanks,

Our core process uses predominately polyethelene. It's a material that you can remelt and turn it into something different. There are different grades and we do a lot of work in the food industry. So the documentation chain has to be clean and accurate. 100% of the time.
EPA has been here over the years and to date there has been no issues with what we use.

This year we started an injection molding division and that gets complicated. We are already using 30 different grades from poly - glass filled nylon. We have added breathing equipment and the operators wear protective garments over their clothes when filling hoppers. I'm no expert in injection grades and we clearly are going to learn a lot over the next year. One of the things we are doing is having a clean room built. If you want to make anything in medical that's the only way allowed.

Sorry, but this is not true in the US.

Millionaire Status is Fleeting

Debates over the equity of the tax burden tend to treat millionaires as a monolithic group even though research suggests that there is a significant amount of churning in and out of this elite status. Indeed, a recent Tax Foundation study used special Treasury panel data to look at the mobility of ?millionaire? taxpayers between 1999 and 2007.[7] It found a great deal of mobility among the so-called rich.

During this nine year period, about 675,000 taxpayers earned over a $1 million for at least one year. As Chart 6 shows, of these taxpayers, 50 percent (about 338,000 taxpayers) were millionaires for only one year, while another 15 percent were millionaires for only two years. By contrast, just 6 percent (38,000 taxpayers) remained a millionaire in all nine years. Based on these results, it is clear that taxpayers move in and out of millionaire status with great frequency. The volatile nature of capital gains realizations and business income appears to be the leading factors for the transiency of millionaires.

IRS data on the so-called Fortunate 400 also shows that even ?super? wealthy Americans are not a static elite club that no one can penetrate. Indeed, the report indicates a great deal of churning among the top 400 taxpayers over a 15 year period. Over that period, 3,305 taxpayers had large enough incomes to put them among the Fortunate 400. However, 73 percent of these taxpayers appeared on the list just once and only 15 percent appeared more than twice. In any given year, 40 percent of these taxpayers had never been on the list in any other year.[8]

I'm happy for his success and have no idea nor care how he got there...just think it would be ironic if he inherited this company from his father and is following the classic stereotype of the born rich who "worked" all their life to get there.

Sad to post to post your corporate headquarters as if to say "Look what a big man I am!!!"

i didn't, but was raised in a setting that i was around a lot of rich people

mostly the dicks are the ones who didn't earn it and know it one way or another

the ones who did earn it, are very cool and slightly sad people..

it must suck, so bad, to go through life wondering if you're being used, or having things out of your control remove your ability to relate to others on any level. Greed, envy, and ignorance must be so common to them

That's bull..you're not happy for me. You'd be happy if I never posted here again and went bankrupt. I posted my corporate headquarters precisely for that reason. You think you are playing with kids.. You're not.

I try and remain civilized here. Yet you and your type always want to push harder for no obvious reason. If you think I am going to post a P&L to prove anything you're dreaming.
My business interests are diverse and we are doing well in America.

You should be happy that I am providing health insurance for many people, and will pay more than my fair share of taxes this year. You should be happy that people like me do a lot for the community and for charity. I put this out last time you attacked me.

I am sponsoring and funding 1,000,000 meals to starving children in Haiti. How about you and Rochard getting involved. I could say fuckem' let them starve and take a private jet on vacation for a few weeks. That's not how it works.

I realize that I've been able to maintain growth for a lot of reasons and I respect that and give back to the community. When you attack people like me you are making a mistake.
I am not the enemy.

In 1986 my mainstream business began to grow rapidly. I have my degree in mechanical engineering but the growth meant hiring more engineers. Pretty soon after I grew myself out of my engineering position.

I liked computers and when the internet started I thought it would have merit to learn HTML.
The consultant I hired to teach me finally asked the question what do you want to build your website about? I told him Porsche's..He came back a few days later and said that Porsche was very protective of their intellectual property and I would be flirting with a lawsuit.

So he asked what was my second choice.. bikini babes! So we registered bikinipage.com. in 1998. Within a few months several playmates emailed me and wanted to be featured and it took off. Yahoo was good to the site. #1 or 2 listing for bikini babes for nearly 6 years. I made investments in several large paysites during that era. Silent investor.

I always told myself it was a fun and very profitable hobby but when it stopped being fun I would get out. Earlier this year a member of this board took it over and I am totally out now.
I still post and read GFY because during those years I did a lot of business online and made a lot of friends.

I extremely applaud you for giving a fuck, and that is all amazing, but feed the starving children here in the states. Why does everyone always give so much help to other countries? There are people in need right here in the states. Everyone is too busy donating to other countries and animal foundations... you know.. help people in the states.

Why you (Minte) think I'm hassling you is a mystery...someone came in and said you inherited your daddies business..I didnt say that - someone else did... I was just saying how refreshing it would be if a guy who was born into wealth would just admit it and not be so defensive about it. With your over reaction to my simple statements you are proving the stereotype for me.

Sad day when one of the people that helped build this industry has to explain himself to those that are recent to the game.

Also, let it serve as a timeless lesson that just because someone doesn't know what someone else makes or does one shouldn't assume one or the other and treat them with any less respect accordingly.

I know one of the most successful people in this industry still drives the beater he drove over 15 years ago. He started at the bottom. Now, he makes more in 60 seconds than most people here make in a year; in all likelihood the first billionaire of online adult, but he is so low key and humble about it that I have literally seen people talk at him like he is a one sale a week CCbill not even covering beer money webmaster posting about whether stats are up or down for everyone else.

I too started out with a loan of $50,000 which I paid back over a five year period plus interest. It started me out in a business that I continued in for more than twenty years. Since I define being rich as having a minimum personal income of one million gross per year I am not currently rich...but I do have more money invested in the market than the average bear...more than I will use in my lifetime.

Bang on

And just to add my own thoughts: even if you *do* know what someone else does or doesn't make, that shouldn't be a factor in how you treat them (plenty of good reasons to give someone shit or not, but solely on $$$ earned or not earned, isn't one of them)

I have a good friend who is from one of the wealthiest families in the city here. His father recently sold a long held property for $25 million and has more money than I am sure he can count.

His son however has done nothing in life and is such a drunk that he is now living on an Indian reservation where his inability to function is somewhat more tolerated. He gets a few hundred a week from a trust fund designed to protect him.

There is another guy who I know from an extremely wealthy California family who inherited a mint when his parents passed away in an accident. It all went on blow and alcohol and it got to the point where his siblings and his own lawyers had to cut him off. He eventually overdosed on Vancouver's skid row.

Certainly a lot of people do well with entitlement, but I have found it can really fuck some people up.
