An 11-year-old Michigan hunter last week killed a rare albino deer while on a hunting trip with his father.

This week, the story is generating a wide range of emotional feedback on Facebook.

Gavin?s father, Mick Dingman, told WZZM 13 that he and his son had spotted the white deer several times in recent the years, and that other hunters had talked about trying to bag the animal.

An admittedly nervous Gavin used a crossbow from 30 to harvest the 12-point trophy buck, and the news quickly spread in hunting circles.

?He kind of feels like a rock star right now,? Mick Dingman said. ?Everyone is calling, all of the hunting shows and hunting magazines.?

Sentiments being expressed on the WZZM 13 Facebook page, where the albino deer story has been shared more than 4,000 times, are somewhat mixed.

?He should have let it live. There are plenty of others out there,? reads one of hundreds of comments.

?If it?s rare, why the hell would he kill it?? reads another.

?I?m fine with hunting, just hate the ?Hey look, it?s different, let?s shoot it? ideas. Shoot it with a camera and let the unique one live,? reads yet another.

Deer-hunting in Michigan is an extremely popular pastime, so it?s not surprising that so many wrote in defense of Gavin Dingman.

?Get over it. The law says it?s legal. Back off the kid!!! Way to go kiddo!!? reads one comment.

?He paid good money for his license. He can use it for anything HE chooses, ? reads another. ?Whether it be a brown deer or an albino buck, the state of Michigan gave him permission to kill it. Leave the kid alone. He did nothing wrong. He harvested a great trophy.?

Some of the commenters criticized WZZM 13 for posting the story on Facebook, opening Gavin to criticism.

?WZZM should stick with reporting news, not trying to make an 11-year-old boy feel guilty for shooting a deer, during deer season,? reads one comment.

Albino deer and leucistic deer (not a true albino) possess genetic defects that cause the white pigmentation.

Some native cultures revere the white animals, and believe that they possess the spirits of ancestors.

This story brings to mind the killing last October of a rare albino ?spirit moose? in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Three hunters involved in that expedition were harshly criticized on social media sites, and ultimately issued a formal apology to the Mi?kmaq people.

It?s unclear whether any native groups have spoken out against Gavin Dingman?s killing of the white deer in Michigan.

The boy?s description of his big moment: ?My dad was just like, ?Take a deep breath. Are you sure you can take the shot? If you?re not 100 percent, we don?t want to injure it.? ?

The family plans to pay a taxidermist to create a full body mount of the deer.

I've never met a deer hunter who does not eat the meat, myself included. People seem to forget that hunting is not a cheap hobby, especially if you own or lease your own chunk of land. Most people want something to show for it, that being a freezer full of tasty deer bits...

Good for the kid, I would have done the same thing at his age.

I used to be a big time hunter from childhood up but I reached a point that I grew tired of killing wild animals. Though I spend a large part of my time in the wild...and have for many years...I will only kill when I deem that it is necessary. I prefer just to admire them.

Are you for real? That's why bag limits are adjusted every hunting season by the state. Previous to last years harsh winter, the deer population in MN has never been higher. Do you really think deer are endangered?

I was at Seneca Army Depot in the early 90's doing things I cant talk about, and that place was overrun with albino dear. Of course we knew about some things stored there and had our own theories about why there were so many mutated deer.

Kid kills deer. Deer passes out from blood loss in 2 minutes and is dead in 6 minutes.

Coyotes kill deer. Deer is held down by the neck and legs while other coyotes eat out its belly while it is alive and thrashing for its life. After about 6 to 10 minutes it finally passes out from blood loss. It finally dies in a technical sense about 15 minutes later from oxygen starvation in the brain.

Hmm.. Seems this kid did that deer a favor.

Ok I'm not a nature freak but let's just say hunters fuckup all the time killing animals, that's how we learn, accidents happen. Coyotes usually take down smaller prey, depending on the number in the pack.

The question isn't should the deer be killed by hunters. Yes. The way we are killing deer in the U.S. is exactly as it should be done.

I'd rather see pics of a pile of cut up packaged meet the family got from the deer/s. THAT would be a cool trend for someone to set.

Show the kid in front of a pile of meat from that deer.

Nothing wrong with the kill itself, or how it was killed.

I have trophies too. I think the word explains it. It's purpose is kinda same than with photos. Why you take photos?

I don't hunt for meat, although I use it. Neither do I fish for meat, although I have once or two used passive methods to catch fish (like nets) and that is pretty much fishing for meat, but there is the thrill too, but way lessen. I hunt and fish because I like to hunt and fish.

Right so it's not just about the meat. It's about bragging who killed the most beautiful or biggest animal with the cleanest kill. The one with the best coat, the biggest antlers etc.

These animals need to be killed and everything on them made useful. That honors the animal. What are you going to do with the head anyway? Use it as decoration if it's worthy. There are so many cool things they do with antlers nowadays too, and of course we know what's done with deer hides. I'm all for all of it. Just tacky taking a picture with the fresh kill like you're a badass

Used to live in North Central Florida and lots of hunters live in the area. Was funny as fuck to see them with the photos of a recent shoot wearing boots jeans and often a polo pull over but went to walmart in full camo.

The bragging part is partially true, but I have trophies those have just personal meaning. For example as a younger I hunted on not so lucrative lands and my skills were not that good either. If I for example hunted 15 days and got 3 ducks to show for it, every duck felt like a victory and I have one or two made as a trophy, and not because of those would have been some specimens. I ate those too, so every part got into use.
