Any advice on radar detectors?
Haven't ever really had one, I know of a few brands-escort, bell, valentine. But any website I look at kind of all just seem like really good marketing schemes to sell that model haha.
Anyone have any recs?

how much time does it give you once you get hit by lasers? enough to slow down?

When it comes to lasers, forget about it; no detector is going to give you enough warning. You need a scrambler for those.

I prefer Valentine One. It's always helpful to know the direction of the threat rather than simply knowing a threat is in the area.

The logical solution here is not to speed. Pretty simple really.
Nothing will protect you from lasers. The calculation of speed is done quicker than the detector is able to warn you that there's a laser pointing at your car, if the detector is able to detect that at all, which most can't. I don't know if you Americans have fixed speed and red light cameras, but the detection field of a fixed speed camera is extremely short. By the time you're even aware of a signal hitting your car the system has calculated your speed. |

I also try to stay less than 10 miles over once I detect anything and so far with my lead foot, no ticket in more than 25 years. |

One of those manufacturers needs to patent a way for their detectors to communicate with other nearby detectors of that same brand. So other drivers can get a warning that a detector further down the road has detected radar, and those other drivers will have time to slow down. Everyone would want that brand of detector.
And courts have recently been saying that flashing your headlights to warn oncoming drivers of speed traps is a first amendment right, so that should open the door for a detector company to develop something like this. .

Haven't had one in like 15 years. Not as much need, as before I lived in suburbs where you could actually get over 35+ mph and for the last 10 years most of my driving is downtown Chicago so if the traffic doesn't fuck ya the potholes will thanks to wonderful winters. So the small percentage I get out of the city I run on gut instinct. 15 years ago had a Bell and it worked fine, sure improvements have been made in that time.

I've got Valentine Ones in my cars. They've saved me many times, but not every time.
Once I had the music up to loud and never hear the signal and another time, I have no idea why.

Radar Detector's are soooo yesterday. Use your smartphone and get Trapster instead : https://trapster.com. I use it all the time. Though its sold to help you navigate around problem areas, it's best feature is the speed feature. It alerts you to speed trap, cameras, hidden cameras etc, known police hiding spots, etc. I've never once got a speeding ticket since I started using it years ago, and it saved me from a big speeding ticket last summer on a road trip to Quebec city.

I used a radar detector both on car and motorbike. I got caught speeding on both
![]() I think having a radar detector only makes you brake the law, giving you the false impression that you can push the pedal as much as you want and never pay a speeding ticket. Bottom line, if you don't wanna get caught, drive according to roads sector speed limit ![]()
