Who here has Tinnitus?

I've had it since the 90's but, for some reason, within the last 2 weeks it amped up about double what it was. What do you do to mitigate your symptoms? Any advice is appreciated.

Tinnitus is a symptom of something else, usually hearing loss. If something in your ear is damaged then the brain can't translate the signals it gets from the ear and will often just turn that into a noise.. like a ringing sound. Your brain will also learn to dampen or ignore those sounds after time.

So.. if something has happened that has increased your hearing loss or something is effecting your brains ability to filter out your tinnitus will go up in volume.

If there's not an incident that has caused further ear damage, then it could be many things, lack of sleep, another medication, stress, try and work out anything your doing or taking that's different from before. If you cant think of anything.. get to a doctor could be something going on inside your head/ inner ear.

One of the best things you can do to lower your tinnitus is get hearing aids, miracle off the shelf herbal remedies.. are snake oil at best.

Lol i just good hit by one same second by spotting this thread.But my problem is not regular tinnitus(where you hear ringing noise,that one i experience only occasinaly like right now),i have problem with pulsatile tinitus which is permament and sometime is totaly bad,like you have a drums inside your head.At the moment,there is only one thing which helps - being outside on fresh air as much is possible.
Another things what could be helpful,is to change your working enviroment.

I have it, probably a result of me doing music all my life.
The strange thing is that it hasn't affected my hearing, recently checked it turned out to be way above average for a 47yold man.
It got worse over night for me last summer which was frustrating.
But my experience have shown that sleep and what I eat affect it a lot. Bad sleep, to much junk equals worse tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a complicated matter as far as I've understood, tons of things can cause it.
I've heard about people getting better after dentist-treatment! Go figure.

I have tinnitus from Meniere's Disease and was diagnosed in my 20's, this disease has impacted 4 known generations in my family, and I'll eventually lose hearing and have to wear hearing aids. listening to music on my ipod w/ earbuds helps *a little* to override it.
my tinnitus gets worse if there is more fluid behind either of my eardrums and can fluctuate in severity on either side/ear. I'm on an extreme low salt diet to keep the fluid down from my inner ear canals, hard to believe salt intake can affect fluid retention there but it does. I take bioflavinoids but haven't noticed that they help, but they can't hurt, if that makes sense. if your tinnitus isn't just neurological, have you had someone check to see if you have any fluid buildup?

Actually, I did wear hearing protection in the Navy, but one time I got caught near an sr71 Blackbird taking off, and my muffs were too far away. You haven't heard loud until you experience that. I'll never forget that day -- aside from having my earholes pummeled, it was just a beautiful thing to witness.

And sometimes it seemed like the gear just didn't protect my ears from jack shit, depending on how close you were to the plane engines.

Same thing with my ar15. Most of the time, I used hearing protection -- but a couple times I forgot my gear but said fuck it and fired it anyway. Anyone that has just heard an assault rifle in movies has no idea of the power of the sound intensity those weapons create.

I'm guessing infantry doesn't use hearing protection in battle. I couldn't imagine being subjected to hours of assault rifle sound with naked ears.

either i had a very weak case of it or didn't have it at all but the ringing went away eventually. My hearing is fine but I'm much more careful with my ears now. the stupid part is most of the damage came from going to live shows, but if you wear ear plugs it actually improves the sound not interfere with it.

I understand the adrenaline people get from going to loud shows but it really doesn't make sense logically, there is no reason for amps to be as loud as they are.

Yes indeed it seems regardless what type of tinnitus is,listening music it increase it,so it seems i can listen only jazz without causing any problems.

There is a procedure you can do to replace the cochlea in your ear. It is expensive, and it might not always work, but it could.

Yea that sounds serious. One guy got his nerve severed & he still had it as its believed to be a brain problem too. He ended up deaf with tinnitus & killed himself. I found it because I postulated if I had my ear nerve severed (the name alludes me) but needless to say I was considering it until then.

I had it for years from working at concerts. It's all but gone now. Like someone else said, eating well and sleeping well seems to fix a lot of the minor shit we all put up with, including this. I did notice it was at its worst around spring, probably due to hayfever. My hayfever is also gone.

Duke I have suffered from tinnitus since I saw ACDC when I was 15. Years of firecrackers and shooting guns with no hearing protection probably did not help either. I have to avoid any loud noises without ear protection or else I will be driven crazy by the ringing while trying to sleep. Whenever I get the ringing I put on a white noise machine. I eventually do not notice it anymore and can turn the white noise machine off without being bothered by ringing ears. I think what happens is your brain adjusts to tune it out but I am not really sure. What I do know is this method works. I use an air purifier when I sleep to clean the air and also to create white noise.

Intresting,white noise is usualy used when you want to supress outside noise which you cant control.

Then get a vitamin deficiency test and make sure they include B-7 (you will have to request it). Biotinidase deficiency has lots of weird symptoms including hearing loss. The changes goodgirl has experienced over the last 6 months is nothing short of amazing.

maybe your eardrums are a bit dryer during the winter. If they were a little more moist, they might flex more and dampen the ringing sound. There is an over the counter eardrop that reduces the ringing sound. I used it once and it worked ok. RingRelief

I tried ring relief, nothing yet. Been a few days. It is dry here in jerey but my office has a humidifier in there for my guitars. I'm in there a lot. In essence I'm fucked.

I lost one ear to my M16 and the other to Rock and Roll. jk Just looked it up. Sounds pretty bad. No pun intended. I do get high pitched ringing from time to time but it goes away pretty quick. Like a grenade went off by you in Call of Duty.

I have it but it doesn't bother me much. I notice it only when I'm trying to sleep and it can be a little distracting but otherwise it doesn't bother me at all.

The thing is, I know exactly when and where I got it. I was at a shitty concert on crescent street in downtown Montreal about 3 years ago. The idiots behind the console were overdriving the speakers and I could hear it "clipping" and causing some serious pain. I don't know if clipping causes damage but I think this is when it happened.

Clipping does not cause anything in the listener. Clipping is a feature of signal processors that know when they are being pushed too hard. All it is is cutting off part of the dynamic range to save the speakers. A system which is being driven wrong can be made to clip while not actually all that loud. Conversely, if a system is very good, and being driven well it well not clip at incredible volumes. I have been in rooms with systems so loud that my eyeballs were compressing with the bass, and there was no clipping.

I got it for years, now. Same with my mom. In both cases it was a side effect antibiotics. Yes, it's very common to get tinnitus from antibiotics and it's incurable. Soemtimes my ears hear noises like standing next to a running jet engine.
