Good article ... luckily I'm relatively apathy-free until later in the afternoon.
Potential mergers like the one with Comcast and Time-Warner are definitely a contributor to the overall problem. Most cable subscribers are bitching about how customer service will get worse and prices will increase. But no one seems to be talking very much about how things like this allow the flow of information to be controlled from the point of creation all the way through delivery to the subscriber's eyes and ears. You've probably seen the infographic below, showing how we've gone from 50 companies owning the majority of media outlets 1983 to now only 6 companies controlling 90% of what we see and hear. It's from 2011 so some things have changed. (GE doesn't own NBC or Comcast anymore. so that 6th company is now Comcast. And Time Warner doesn't own AOL, so Huffington Post isn't affiliated with them.) But even this slightly-dated image may give a few people who aren't big on reading long articles something to think about. ![]() ...and yes, I do see the possible fallacy in suggesting that those who don't like to read are still likely to spend any significant time thinking about things presented to them visually. But I prefer to live a life filled with hope...well, at least until the apathy kicks in sometime after noon. ![]()
