question for my guitar brothers
As you know I got a 2013 gibson lpj
http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Elec...n-USA/LPJ.aspx Being left handed its not like you can go into music store and play 50 guitars. I bought it online, its a nice guitar but I hate the thick neck. The local guitar center has a mim white lefty fender strat, the guy on the phone told me he would probably trade it straight out. Which would be cool because gibson changed the model and dropped the price on the one I have. I have to go check it out but what are your thoughts on that trade in? |

Check the net for it first mate, always find a dickhead selling his under priced, and always some bellend thats willing to buy yours for retail, especially if its brand new, or could tuck yours away for one of those 'just incase' moments.

I have no probs with MIM strats. They are typically well-made. It's usually sketchy to do a straight-up swap of a LP for a strat but it looks like your's is worth ~$500-ish on the used market and a new MIM strat is about that price also so it certainly looks on the surface to be a square trade.
The things I like about that strat- 1. it's white, they look fantastic in white 2. the neck on a strat is usually pretty fucking sweet. 3. it's very comfortable to play, especially sitting down, more comfortable than an LP due to the contours. Things I don't like about the strat- 1. It ain't a Les Paul, the tones you will get out of it are limited, nevertheless, they are popular tones. |

http://www.guitarcenter.com/-i2800827.gc I guess the mim strat they have is new but it a little beat up hence why he thinks he could do a swap. Im going to go play it Sat and see if I like it. If I dont I will walk away. |

I collect both Stratocasters and Gibsons
![]() My personal take: 1. Standard stratocaster pickups on the MIM guitars do not hold a candle to the output of the Gibson LPJ humbuckers. 2. Hardware on the MIM starts is not as nice as Fender USA guitars. What I would recommend to check out as a collector: - Check out the Fender Strat plus guitar line. These you can find on Ebay all over for anywhere from $800 to $1500 ... These have standard: Lace Sensor pickups (Much hotter than standard Strat pickups, plenty of power. ) a Tremsetter to keep your guitar in tune no matter how hard you wang bar it. Also nice roller nuts for the headstock and really really nice tuners that lock down the strings. The Fender Strat plus was made from 1989-1999.. These were just one step down from the custom shop strats. Mine: I'd never sell as they are just that wicked of a guitar. - Check out the Strats with noiseless pickups. I recently picked up an Eric Clapton Strat from 2006. This has Noiseless pickups that are active and honestly - It has as much power as my Custom shop, Gibson Les Paul custom.. Insanely nice craftsmanship of the entire guitar. - The LPJ: That is a pretty nice guitar and NOWHERE near a straight trade value for a MIM strat. The guy would trade up even as he's making out on the deal for getting the better guitar. I play the blues, Jazz, Metal and rock... the Clapton strat is by far the ballsiest guitar I've ever played. The active pickups scream when needed and have that classic strat tone. Jam on ! |

I would play the other guitar before you get it, you never know what guitar is going to speak to you and you may like the one you have better after you play an alternative.
There are a LOT of seasoned guitar players that look for thicker necks because many consider that after the pickups the neck is the single biggest factor in "tone" and the fatter, the better.

Build your own, the way you like. A brand name isnt shit compared to how valuable an instrument that you love will be worth to you. |

They are nice looking guitars but I think since Gibson started to CNC most of their guitars a bit of the spirit of the old sound is gone. Hand carved guitars sound better because a person carves and listens to the sound of the wood as they removed from it.

I don't have so much experience with Fender or Gibson, they are not my style, I am playing mostly thrash metal, I have more experience in B.C. Rich, Shecter and Jackson. If you have questions with these guitars just let me know
