It's generally a lot, even considering the dollar being fucked.

appendectomy

apparently the chain that runs the hospital just paid out 46 million for an out of court settlement about false and misleading billing practices

sucks being 20 and having a bill like that

This is the same chain that tried to tell me that a simple swab test was $908. $240 after insurance. After months of back and forth, because there was simply no way I was going to pay that much for such a routine test, they discovered a "billing code error". I paid $23.00.

But yes that really sucks. Even with insurance a catastrophe can easily ruin you financially in this country!

Take a look at the actual costs....

$16,000 for the actual surgery: I might be okay with this really.

$7,501 for two hours in the recovery room: HUH? A bed in a room with a heart monitor... Even if you have a nurse standing by tending only to that one person every second.... That can't be more than $200. Think about that for a moment.

$4,878 for one night's stay: HUH? A very small cramped hotel room with a few crappy meals and a nurse that checked in on him three times in eight hours? That's worth maybe $400 at most.

$4,562 for anesthesia: HUH? $4k to pump $30 worth of drugs into someone and then monitor them for two hours during an operation? Even if you pay them $100/hour, that's only $200 plus $30 worth of medication.

Fuck me with a broomstick already. No wonder why our healthcare is so fucked up.

I wrote this back in 2007 right after I had spinal surgery....here are a few of the charges I had in 2007

Health Care Costs….Check This Out:

These are some of the charges from the hospital (ya the same one that tried to kill me)

I was in for 8 nights

Room (private) $5,184.00

Drugs $7,577.00

“Supplies” $10,000.00

Operating Room (6 hrs) $11,610.00

Recovery Room 1 (hr) $1,041.00

these are only a few of the charges…. But I want to point out a few things lets do it from the top.

Can you imagine the room and service Id have gotten for 5200 bucks a week?

Drugs…Ok this one really got me….they gave me 2 percocet every 3 hrs, morphine via a pump (50mL lasted a day) a total of 21 medrol and about 30 neurontin there is no way in hell that those drugs could come to that total unless they are price gouging (they are)

Supplies…what supplies they changed my sheets every other day, I presume they WASH and reuse those….ok maybe my IV was a supply but 10K for an IV?

the operating room….i wasn’t concious in therre so I have no idea but for that price it better have more controls than the starship enterprise.

recovery room…1000 bucks to put me in a room with a dozen other people where a nurse watches me for an hour while I become conscious again?

These don’t even incluude what the doctor charges or the anestesiologist. The other misc charges pushed my hospital bill alone to over 50K.

So what’s going on here? this isn’t a government subsidized hospital with patients that dont pay why are they price gouging? why are they charging 7K for drugs that could have been gotten at any drugstore for under 500 bucks? hel you could buy them on the street for less moeny.

And at these prices why can’t they get qualified nurses who care and are competent and dont try to kill me?

Yes Im rather pissed……

If I ever have to go to the hospital again

I’m going to start by getting a room at the Ritz and hiring a hooker every night. The service will be better, the hooker can give me a nice bath and take care of me even if I cant fuck and she will be prettier, nicer and probably more professional than the nurses were at Northside Hospital. And the best part, Ii will save money.

Next I’m going to hit the drug dealers on the street and get my dilaudid and my oxycodones, they will be a LOT cheaper.

25% after the first $16k and 40% after about $70k
pensions/medical is a capped % aswell.

Put it this way. if its costs $12k a year to insure a family. that's tax on a $60k salary.

They found something 4cm big in my fathers left lung and because he does not live in my country he had no health insurance. I went the most expensive way possible, he had surgery to do an immediate biopsy and everything cost me 400$ total keep in mind he has ZERO insurance...

thank god after this everything was fine BUT on the xray the tumor did not show BUT on the CT scan it did...the biopsy came back as benign BUT the surgeon felt that we needed to make sure with another biopsy, only this time deeper, and this time it would cost me a whole whopping 50$ (just the biopsy) the surgeon did it for free because he felt it was the right thing to do...

2 surgeries and 2 biopsies total: 450$

the difference between US healthcare and our 3rd world healthcare is that our healthcare is actually done by human beings...I do not think you can find one doctor in our whole country who could morally justify billing you 5000$ for a room when you are sick and in need of treatment

That's why there should be no such thing as health insurance. A doctor would never charge a patient $5000 for a bed. But a Hospital has no problem charging an Insurance Company $5000 for a bed. Everyone chip in and we'll take care of everyone. Seems to work. So does the metric system.

About the same in Poland, co-pay is not widely used tho, as of we have a universal system. Generally if you work you're covered.

That was also likely negotiated between the Insurance Co. and the Hospital and probably much less than the price we see on the invoice.
