NatNet Down?

Anyone else having connection issues. I realize natnet more than likely is busy trying to fix any problems they may have. Just checking to see if anyone had a update.

Drives me nuts that they don't use the http://www.nationalnetupdates.com/ or Twitter accounts to update customers.

Sorry for the interruption guys. It seems that some idiot out there decided to DDOS our name servers. As our protocol we spent a short time fighting it ourselves before we decided that we needed to send it to our outside Mitigation Firm that we contract with for times like this They are building the signature now and are telling us that it will be back very soon.

Sorry, again, but this will be fixed very soon. Thanks for your patience.

VERY good point. You are exactly right. We should have already started that but it kept looking like it was going to be another 5 minutes and be over. I will make sure that is started up right now.

Sorry for not doing that sooner.

Sorry for the delay. Our Mitigation Firm is still trying to build the signature. It is a little tougher when it is DNS but they are confident that it will not be long. Sorry for the inconvenience. This is frustrating to say the least.

I am happy to report that everything is back to 100%. This only affected a portion of our customers but that is no consolation to those that were affected. We are very sorry for the disruption but our third party Mitigation Firm has handled it and they will continue to mitigate this problem until it is completely finished.

My sites are not back up (or they came up and have since gone down again). I can't get to the NatNet support system, either.

Sorry, Adam. We are aware and our Mitigation Firm continues to try to solve this for good. The attacker is very good but I think our Mitigation Firm is even better. They will get to the bottom of it, I promise.

So sorry for the frustration....I am right there with you, my friend.

Thanks for the kind words. Things have been back up for about an hour but I am hesitant to say that we are out of the woods, yet. Every time the attacker (can we just call him asshole, for the purposes of this discussion?)....every time the asshole changes his signature our Mitigation Firm gets a better read on him and will be able to make a permanent fix...but they tell me that usually they just get tired when they realize that nothing they do will last very long and they just move on to an easier target. We will hope that it is finished and everyone can go back to making money again!!

Sorry, again, for the issues. It is ridiculous that you, or we, have to spend our time dealing with this sort of non-sense. People just kill me sometimes.

Sorry to say, but there isn't such a thing as a 'permanent fix' against a DDoS attack. Your technical guys tell you storys...

Good point, FK. You are right. Nothing is permanent. But there are many things that go on in the background that lead us to a permanent solution. The biggest is that every time the attacker changes we change with him. As a general rule he will get tired and move onto easier prey. Another is that we try to isolate the target of the attack so that an attack on one target cannot affect others on the network. And still another is that we find that very unique signature (kind of like a bombmaker has that allows Criminalists to track him down) that will allow us to filter out the attack using a a signature that he did not even know he has...a "tell" if you are poker player. Most attackers have them, it just takes a little longer to find them.

Again, we do not claim to be DDoS experts. On the contrary, we know when we are out of our league. This is why we have contracts with two Mitigation Firms that can come to our rescue when we need it. We pay them very good money to help and they are pretty good at their job.

Hopefully we are done for the night on this one but we will be monitoring it just in case.

Oh no, Why....our customers are much smarter than that. Any that were affected would already know that they were not making money. That site is just for them to get updates as to what is being done. No wool pulling here, I can assure you

That is correct,Why. Any customer who had DNS elsewhere saw not even a blip.

Of course, with that said, many of them have dealt with other issues with their DNS provider that took them down in the past when everything here was up. Few things are as frustrating as having your servers up and nobody being able to reach them because DNS is down whether the DNS is in the same room or with an entirely different company. There are valid reasons for using a third party DNS provider but redundancy is really not one of them.

Hope that makes sense.

Off to bed for me....as of right this minute our Mitigation Firm is one step ahead of the attacker and hopefully they will stay there.

To the entire NationalNet Family, I am sorry if you were one of the ones affected but trust that we are doing all we can to protect you (and us) from unscrupulous operators that like to create havoc instead of inventing or innovating. Our Mitigation people tell me that this attacker is very skilled...imagine what he could do with his talents if he tried to make some honest money. I could only hope!

Good Night All!!

no knock, i understand all DNS servers (like any other type of server) are subject to attack.

the alternative would be to keep 4 NS entires, two with you and two elsewhere, but keeping them in sync might be a pain?
