Colbert to replace Letterman

Since I don't have cable any more, this is pretty good news for me; anyone heard rumors who will replace Colbert on CC?

They are going to replace Letterman with a "character"?

Seems kinda weird to me.

It would be like bringing in Mike Myers but telling him to do the gig as "Austin Powers". lol

I think they should have made a play for Howard Stern. But he probably would want too much money since he's making a fortune on Sirius Radio.

EDIT: Just read the CBS story. Looks like he will NOT be doing the "right wing pundit" parody character of Steven Colbert that he does on Comedy Channel and will just be "himself"

No one can replace Colbert. As far as being "himself" goes...we all know he's sharp as hell, and will probably be almost the same guy we see on Colbert Report, except the right wing punditry act will be dropped. He's smart, and will make a new talk show persona that'll probably not really be himself, but fit perfectly for the job.

They are trying to replace Letterman with someone more hip.

Meanwhile, Fallon is doing good.

I read that Stern was one of the first people they approached, but he told them he was too busy with his radio show to do it. Like you say, that probably means he wanted too much money.

I think right out the gate he would do well because people would be interested in seeing what he was doing. He is a great interviewer, but on radio he often has 30-60 minutes to interview someone so I'm not sure how well he could do with only a few minutes per guest.

I also don't know that he would want to kiss celebrities asses every night so he might struggle to get guests. If you can't get decent guests the show would likely fail.

I'm not looking forward to this at all. 90% of the late nigh shows are absolute garbage. Stephen Colbert is hilarious is just about everything he does, but it's a bummer he's leaving his show for late night.

I sort of agree.

The old "Late Night With David Letterman" on NBC was bad ass for instance. He was so acerbic and pissed off so many celebrities on that show. It was really, really good.

But once he moved to 11:30 on CBS...he had to tone it waaaaayyyyy down. And all that craziness that made his show so good was pretty much neutered.

He's still good. But since Letterman moved to 11:30 we got "Dave-light".

I think the same thing will happen with Colbert. Since he won't be playing the character, we already know he won't be as outrageous anymore.
Heck, I'm not sure what he will be.

Maybe he'll surprise us?

Love Letterman, would prefer Ferguson, Stewart or Stern over Colbert.

I like Colbert but as others have already said, he is only known for his tv show character which is heavily tied to politics. The late show isn't a political show, so I wonder how well he will be able to brake himself away from that roll.

I totally share your opinion. I'm just wondering if the announcement was made on April 1st ... April Fools ?

I think Stern would have given Fallon a run for his money. Personality wise I think Conan is kind of close to Dave but he's damaged goods in their eyes I'm sure

stern is a well known name with shitty content. his show is awful unless 3rd grade fart jokes and whiny stripper voices on the radio excite you. good luck with that.

i'd rather see colbert.

You all seem to forget the Colbert from Strangers with Candy, as well as a Correspondent with the Daily Show. He is incredibly funny, and adaptable, not to mention a very good interviewer on his show. Colbert will be fine.

Howard Stern would be a terrible replacement. He does not have what it takes to put on a successful TV talk show, I guess no one here saw the late night TV show pilots Howard shot for Fox that are on youtube.

Colbert pays tribute to Fallon on Jimmy's first night - runs from 1:38 - 1:58:

I was pulling for Bob Sagat or Sarah Silverman to take over from Letterman, but alas, my write-in campaign didn't work (I forgot to click "send" on my e-mail).

Have luck Stephen Colbert!

I think Fallon is going to reign as late night king for some time. He's funny and quite talented (he can dance, sing, play guitar, act, does good stand-up, sketch, and improv comedy, and above average impressions), plus the Tonight Show has very good writers, and Jimmy has a decent sidekick, and a truly kickass band (The Roots).

I don't think Seth Meyers is going to be around for very long. I predict a female will get his slot eventually (Amy Poehler, another Lorne Michaels performer, after Parks and Recreation ends, or perhaps Tina Fey?).
