How much to buy an abandoned town?

Are there ghost towns you can buy? If I could buy one cheap I'd like to rename it legally to Parts Unknown, California or whatever state and then sell souvenirs, maybe convince some old fake wrestling villains to move there.

Not a whole town but you could probably afford a good chunk of Detroit.

This Ghost Town in Northern California, located between Sacramento and Reno, is for sale on Craigslist, and even comes with a liquor license:

http://www.ibtimes.com/seneca-califo...gslist-1471780

Quote:
The current owner reportedly purchased the property in the mid-1970s for $60,000 but had to leave for health reasons (“The area isn’t suitable for anyone in shaky health”). The seller said there are “no known environmental hazards,” while the deal includes all mineral and timber rights, the liquor license, a deed, a title search and title insurance. Annual property taxes run about $700, while the liquor license, subject to county approval, costs roughly $400 each season (April to December).

The Plumas County assessor's records value the land and structures in Seneca at about $72,000, but if $250,000 for an abandoned ghost town with little of value, a bar that hasn’t been open in some time and buildings in a state of disrepair sounds like the deal of a lifetime...

Have luck...

Interesting concept, what about developing new town from scratch?

Neat. Would be perfect. I read an article about the nightmares people who have bought abandoned towns have run into. But they were/are hoping to have people/family live there and that means providing services - water, sanitation, power. All my idea needs is a sign 'WELCOME TO PARTS UNKNOWN'.

^ How is that perfect, not a single house-home there.
It would be easier to build your house somewhere and declare it a town.

Didn't Sandra Bullock buy an entire town a few years back?

Or some other actress maybe?

It looks like it had huge population spike around the time it was bought.
Although how do you buy a town with hundreds of people? Do you go and make everybody sell their homes/land?

I have thought a town needs to be made in Colorado to have the most relaxed regulations about cannabis. Allowed to be smoked in public etc. Instead of a dispensary make it a farmers market town. With all kinds of home grown produce and of course cannabis in all forms available from quality growers. Make it a Marijuana Mecca of sorts. There is thousands of acres available in that state. Someone with the cash could grow hotels and site seeing, tourist trade galore.

There is a place in Illinois called Vish nu springs. It used to be a small town of about 15 buildings or so. All that is left now is a dilapidated Hotel in the middle of the woods. It sold for about $200,000 to the local college there. They still have open houses about once a year talking about the history of the place. But my point is you probably could have bought it for around $200,000 up until several years ago had you wanted. So it is viable. Here's the history of this particular place:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vishnu_Springs,_Illinois

I bet there are thousands of others like it out there in the US alone. Many with the history buried.

It's really nothing more than a corporation.. You buy the debt and collect revenue (taxes).. In reality you don't own anything more than the corporate assets but those who have chosen to be within the incorporated area and accept the services of it pay taxes to it. IE. The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is nothing more than a corporation and an incorprated area with a President and board members.

long time ago (can't speak for europe) in poland there was term "private city" - if you were rich enough you could "bought" entire city from the crown for some time (from few years to xx years) what does it mean?

After paid to the crown your fee city was yours to setup/collect and own all taxes from all crafts there, it helped crown with covering some debts and the lucky guy who bought town grown rich at the time he own town.

city i live in (currently over 70k ppl) was private in the middleages for 3 years.

just interesting history fact ;)

So who is the seller in such instances? And what if there are no debts?
And if you do not have to buy land/houses how come that Seneca, CA town ad talks exactly just about buying property/land etc?

You would be acquiring the assets which would include town owned land. IE city hall? Properties seized by unpaid taxes, etc, etc. The corporation also known as the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA owns lots of property and has many assets as well as debt..

When my home-town burned to the ground years ago, a farmer leased off 50x100 plots for the town to rebuild upon. $1 a month for 100 years or something stupid like that. That lease finally ran out a couple years ago after handed down and 3 generations born to it in that old house. My grandparents didnt bother buying out in the end, when my grampa died, my nan just gave the land back to the corporation that now owns the lands RIGHT before some natives set fire to it before recouping all the wood. Was more expensive in land taxes than the lease rate as well as the buy-out. Pointless... so the fire actually saved some money, too lol

Many communities are like this, using old leases at dirt-cheap prices. So, it's worth handing down.
