This Is the Pregnant Woman Sudan Wants to Hang for Marrying a Christian

Lawyers for a pregnant Sudanese woman plan to appeal an Islamic judge's decision that she be flogged with 100 lashes and then be hanged for marrying a Christian man and converting.

Amnesty International and Western embassies are expressing alarm over the harsh sentence meted out to Meriam Yehya Ibrahim Ishag, who is eight months pregnant.

So far the only concession granted by the Islamic court is to wait until Ishag gives birth before carrying out the sentence.

Amnesty International called the court's ruling "truly abhorrent." The organization's Sudan researcher Manar Idriss said that "adultery and apostasy are acts which should not be considered crimes at all. It is flagrant breach of international human rights law."

Western embassies in Sudan including the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands also echoing that sentiment issued a joint statement expressing "deep concern" about the case and urged Sudan to respect the right to freedom of religion.

Amal Habany, a political activist in support of women's rights, said "The court has no appearance of justice or respect for freedom of choice in ones beliefs, personally and individually."

Despite the outrcy, the Islamic court has been unmoved.

The judge told Ishaq, "We gave you three days to recant, but you insist on not returning to Islam. I sentence you to be hanged to death." Officially her crime is apostasy.

Ishaq replied, "I am a Christian and I never committed apostasy."

The judge also ruled that her marriage to a Christian man was invalid and not recognized under Islamic law, which means that she had committed adultery. He ordered her to be flogged for that alleged offense.

After the sentence was decreed, the prosecutor's spokesman Ahmad Hassan told the Associated Press that "they were given ample time to prove their innocence, but I for one believe in upholding our traditions and customs as Sudanese."

On 15 May, Meriam Yehya Ibrahim was sentenced to death by hanging for ?apostasy?, and to flogging for ?adultery?. She is a prisoner of conscience convicted because of her religious beliefs and identity.

Meriam Yehya Ibrahim is eight months pregnant and currently in detention with her 20-month-old son. On 15 May, her death sentence was handed down by a court in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, after she refused to recant her religion.

She had been given three days by the court to recant her faith after being convicted of ?adultery? and ?apostasy? on 11 May. Meriam was sentenced to death by hanging under Article 126 of the Sudan Criminal Code for ?apostasy?, and to 100 lashes under Article 146 for ?adultery?.

The date of the execution has not yet been announced. According to Sudan?s Criminal Code, a woman that is heavily pregnant cannot be executed before giving birth to her child and nursing him or her for two years. A government spokesperson has been quoted as saying that Meriam Yehya Ibrahim can appeal the ruling at a higher court.

Amnesty International considers the death penalty to be the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment and a violation of the right to life and opposes its use in all cases and without exception, regardless of the nature of the crime. In addition, the punishment of flogging violates the absolute prohibition against torture and other ill-treatment in international human rights law.

 Urging the authorities to ensure that Meriam Yehya Ibrahim is released immediately and unconditionally because she is a prisoner of conscience, convicted solely because of her religious beliefs and identity;

 Calling on the authorities to repeal Articles 126 and 146 that criminalize apostasy and adultery respectively, in conformity with Sudan?s obligations under international human rights law;

 Calling on the authorities to establish a moratorium on executions, as a first step towards abolishing the death penalty, and to abolish the punishment of flogging.

It's not all of a sudden. The media has run with these sorts of stories before. Remember the 16 year old Iranian girl who in 2004 was personally hanged by the same judge who, one week previous, convicted her of "offending public morality".

Then in 2007 the media was all over the 17 year old Iraqi girl who was stoned to death because her boyfriend's religion was different.

In the intervening years dozens of similar stories received heavy media coverage as well.

The thing is, once any sort of outrageous act become commonplace, it's no longer news in the sense of being about about anything new.

And when it ain't news, it don't get on the news.

The public gets bored hearing the same shit over and over and over again.

The only reason why the media picked up on this story is that it - like the recent Nigerian schoolgirl story - had a slightly different twist to it.

Nonetheless, in the coming months reports of subsequent kidnappings of still more Nigerian schoolgirls will likewise be greeted with yawns from the general public.

That's just human nature and the media will always be about focusing on things that humans actually tune in to watch.

Its not so much the book as it is man's interpretation that suits his needs. Most people are illiterate in these countries. I know, I was married to a Moroccan girl. When I heard the stuff she believed I asked where she got this nonsense from. "My uncle."

they are some of worlds' biggest hypocrites - they have so much suppressed frustrations because of the rules they lay upon themselves. Reacting like animals when you as a tourist ask this, while they have the dirtiest fantasies (and actions) because of this taboo culture.
