News Seattle poised to raise minimum wage to $15 per hour

Seattle City Council is scheduled to vote today on a historic plan to raise the minimum wage to a nation's-highest $15 per hour.

Washington already has the highest state minimum wage at $9.32 per hour, well above the federal minimum of $7.25. The Seattle plan would phase in the higher, local minimum wave over three to seven years, depending on the size of the business and benefits they provide employees.

City officials estimate that about a quarter of workers earn less than $15 per hour. Full-time work at that rate translates to about $31,000 per year.

Seattle venture capitalist Nick Hanauer, a key backer of the effort, says the city is a prosperous but costly place to live.

"Fifteen dollars is a very conservative number that we know for certain the economy can support," he told the Los Angeles Times. "Fifteen is a good solid number for a place like this, but probably is too much for a small town in Arkansas where living costs are much, much, much lower."

The ordinance was drafted by an advisory group of labor, business and nonprofit professionals. In a contentious meeting last week, a City Council committee agreed to delay implementation of the ordinance from Jan. 1 to April 1. They rejected amendments that would have sped up phase-ins as well and would have excluded tips from total compensation. The council also approved a sub-minimum wage for teenagers.

The plan was approved unanimously by the City Council members at the meeting, indicating that passage into law is likely.

"Seattle, and other cities, are taking direct action to close our nation's huge income gap because the federal and state governments have failed to do so," City Councilman Nick Licata said. "By significantly raising the minimum wage, Seattle's prosperity will be shared by more people and create a sustainable model for continued growth."

Crystal Thompson, 33, told The Seattle Times she has been working at a local Domino's Pizza for five years and still makes minimum wage. She says her responsibilities have grown, and she sometimes is responsible for opening and closing the store.

"I think I deserve a raise," she told the Times.

As the article said...Washington D.C. has the current highest minimum wage. Any of y'all ever visited that city?

They also have the strictest gun laws in the U.S.

Check the figures on poverty, cost of living, and gun deaths for Washington D.C. if you want to know how this will all end up when it plays out in Seattle.

My guess is this: The cost of living will now rise in Seattle even further. That will eliminate any small gain made by raising the minimum wage.
And nothing will change...except some politicians get to use this as a populist issue to get more votes and spend more of their sorry lives as bureaucrats that never get a "real job".

But if your job is a shit job that a monkey could do??? Then HELL YES it's too much.

Pay should (and always has been) tied to your skill level and/or amount of risk of the job (like guys who work at nuclear plants or oil riggers).

Paying a guy $15 an hour to take your order at McDonald's? Dumb.

And as I said...just take a look at Washington D.C. to see how well a high minimum wage does. Lots of poverty there (except of course for the politicians and bureaucrats living it up off the taxpayer).

Also keep in mind all the people who have worked hard for years and years to rise up to a $15 an hour wage...now all their work was for nothing.

So if union workers are guaranteed to make say 400% of what minimum wage is...Then costs are going through the roof on EVERYTHING.

Seems like way too big of an increase too fast. The sensible approach would be to raise it to that level over the course of several years. Like 10, not 6 or 7.
