USA Police "solider up"

Interesting article from the New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/09/us...ents.html?_r=0

As we gear down our foreign wars in the Middle East the tools of war are not being mothballed as was done in previous wars but the Obama administration has made them charityware for civilian law enforcement agencies ...
Quote:

[T]he equipment has been added to the armories of police departments that already look and act like military units. Police SWAT teams are now deployed tens of thousands of times each year, increasingly for routine jobs. Masked, heavily armed police officers in Louisiana raided a nightclub in 2006 as part of a liquor inspection. In Florida in 2010, officers in SWAT gear and with guns drawn carried out raids on barbershops that mostly led only to charges of ?barbering without a license.? ...

?It just seems like ramping up a police department for a problem we don?t have,? said Shay Korittnig, a father of two who spoke against getting the armored truck at a recent public meeting in Neenah. ?This is not what I was looking for when I moved here, that my children would view their local police officer as an M-16-toting, SWAT-apparel-wearing officer.?

A quiet city of about 25,000 people, Neenah has a violent crime rate that is far below the national average. Neenah has not had a homicide in more than five years.

?Somebody has to be the first person to say ?Why are we doing this?? ? said William Pollnow Jr., a Neenah city councilman who opposed getting the new police truck. ....

The ubiquity of SWAT teams has changed not only the way officers look, but also the way departments view themselves. Recruiting videos feature clips of officers storming into homes with smoke grenades and firing automatic weapons. In Springdale, Ark., a police recruiting video is dominated by SWAT clips, including officers throwing a flash grenade into a house and creeping through a field in camouflage. ...

Pentagon data suggest how the police are arming themselves for such worst-case scenarios. Since 2006, the police in six states have received magazines that carry 100 rounds of M-16 ammunition, allowing officers to fire continuously for three times longer than normal. Twenty-two states obtained equipment to detect buried land mines.

In the Indianapolis suburbs, officers said they needed a mine-resistant vehicle to protect against a possible attack by veterans returning from war.

?You have a lot of people who are coming out of the military that have the ability and knowledge to build I.E.D.?s and to defeat law enforcement techniques,? Sgt. Dan Downing of the Morgan County Sheriff?s Department ...

And you wonder why we Americans own weapons as infective as they may be. The weapons we own are self delusional ...

Why do you think we're seeing all these raids gone bad in the news? The police don't want to feel like their money's been wasted, so they go on needless raids to flex their muscle.

Well that's nice to know. The police view the very people that protect our freedoms, to be our enemies.

It is conditioning. They have been baby stepping the USA into a police state since 9-11. If the dollar or economy collapses, or if people get fed up and start picking off police one at a time, or any other unforeseen situation arises where they need to have control, the new and improved militarized police can now react with an overwhelming show of force to subdue the peasants, and be equipped to out gun any gang or militia that counters them. And by that time, everyone will be used to it so it will be accepted as the norm no matter how brutal their actions may be. Perhaps not in our lifetime, but in our children's lifetime.

My first trip to Venezuela back in 1999 was a real eye opener for me. In Caracas they had military police roaming the streets (in large numbers) in full tactical gear with attack dogs, and it was very intimidating. It was a bit scary to be honest, because I had never seen anything like it before. I remember thinking how thankful I was that I was going home to a country where the police didn't look like that. Fast forward a decade and look at them now. The only difference is they are not yet roaming the streets in units, on foot, with attack dogs, intimidating the people and pushing them around at random. But it's coming, count on it.

I read this article today and I don't see any issues with it. The military has surplus gear and it's not cost effective for them to maintain it, so they need to get rid of it. It's either destroy it or sell it to local law enforcement. Does your local home town need a military-style armored personnel carrier? Not really, but if they ever have a hostage situation it might just come in handy.

I wonder if the police get the current Bradley Fighting Vehicle complete with cannon and 2 TOW anti-tank missiles. That would blow the fucking walls out!

BOOM! What's that noise? "It's just the cops raiding another dope house ..."

But if you believe in the Second Amendment's unwritten intention, that an armed public keeps the government "honest" -- this is an escalation that must then be matched!

Citizens must have the constitutional right to bear fully automatic weapons in the face of the growing para-military police threat to our freedoms.

Look how safe Afghanistan is ... There are lots of Afghani citizens with real AK47s (fully automatic) and hand grenades. Afghanistan is such a safe place for reason of the citizens matching the para military and insurgent forces armaments ... Oh wait ...

On the surface it seems like a good idea, so we don't waste the hardware.
But, if you look closer into the conspiracy theory manual.
You will see the real reasons for militarizing our police forces.

I want to take it the other way... I want police to dress like mild mannered scouts, maybe even dress them it pastels. Cops who dress mean, act mean. No military wear for cops on duty. Pink bullet proof vests etc.....

Also, why do police need or ever would use silencers or grenade launchers is the question.

I did kind of chuckle when I read that a local police department had dozens of silencers....

No matter how hard one tries to make fun of conspiracy theorists, get ready for the NWO.

Just look at the map, look at the California section. Why is the red blocks only in that particular area in the California section of the map?

Civil unrest is coming and the most populated areas will be executed.

Why? Do you feel it's ok for the police to shoot/execute a subject with out anyone knowing?
...or the simple fact they are allowed to use illegal weapons?

Anyone with half a brain can see this has been going on for years indeed. Of course, that counts a lot of the members here out.

The USA has been stolen and this was carefully planned and is going right as planned.

If the NYPD police had APCs or Bradly fighting vehicles could they have prevented the 9/11 attacks on the WTC in Manhattan -- NO. If they had the immediate use of FIM-92 Stinger missiles would the police had shot down the second civilian aircraft before it crashed into the other WTC building minutes later -- probably not, where would it have crashed? The USAF sat unwilling to shoot down the planes save for the cost of collateral damage, unknown perhaps that the planes' occupants were doomed to a fiery death at the hands of terrorists. (Discounting the conspiracy theorists versions of that day's events.)

If the Boston Police had APCs or Bradly fighting vehicles could they have prevented the Boston Marathon Bombing -- NO.

So why the hell do the police need APCs or Bradly fighting vehicles, 100 round assault rifles or silencers for their guns? Flack jackets, military police equipment, encrypted field communications gear, normal weapons and military grade ammo -- OK. Even surplus aircraft and helicopters. But APCs or Bradly fighting vehicles, maybe TOW missiles or other battlefields weapons?

Is the destiny of your city in America to become a battlefield for paramilitary police SWAT or counter-terrorism forces? You don't think drug traffickers and organized crime will take notice and obtain better hardware? This will cause escalation of super violent crime and less thought given to shooting of police that are not heavily armed, just performing civilian law enforcement duties.

the weaker the government the stronger the police...

the more bullshit the foreign policy the stronger the army...

lets see there's 190 countries in the world and the USA has military bases in 130 of them...so the only conclusion I can draw is that "Democracy" is finally arriving in the USA as well and so is "liberation"

So the gun nuts needs automatic weapons to protect themselves from the govt, and the police need to militarise to protect themselves from the army, and the teachers need to be armed to protect themselves from the kids.

If you had more guns you would all be so much safer.

Land of the Free.

Because eventually, the bonus "war on terror" is going to take place on US soil. You can only murder and bomb so many people before that shit eventually comes back to bite you in the ass in every way, shape or form it can. Home grown jihadist who can inflict real damage is not a matter of if, but a matter of when.

It's also for the day when/if US citizens decide they want to go the way of Syria, Egypt, Libya, or any other country where the masses have nothing else to lose and everything to gain. I don't personally think such a thing is ever going to happen in the USA, but anything is possible and the government / states will be ready for it if it does. In the meantime, they will slowly disarm the people, one type of weapon at a time.

why do police officers who are sworn to protect and serve the public have silencers?

Silencers are ONLY used for silently killing another human being.

If you are a police officer, why would you need to hide your identity and need to use a silencer?

Isnt funny how no one has woken up with a full on revolution yet?

So you mean that text on the side of police cars that clearly state "to protect and serve the public" doesn't mean anything?

Or the simple fact that we the people who pay taxes pay their salary?

no sir.

well, from my understanding, isn't a great deal of their salary generated from civil forfeiture?

like, to a point where they have 'turf wars' over high income 'stopping locations'?

kinda like bandits.. privateers!

The sheep who think they are sane, call those who watch what is going on right in front of your eyes conspiracy theorists.

We the people put police in power to protect and serve the people.

The USA has been hijacked by the banking cartel.

Now NYtimes is informing us that our police are suiting up for war and that police are not on the people side.

I must be doing something wrong here...or live on a different planet....the police don't bother me, not breaking in my door, throwing flash bangs at me or anything else...well...if I do something wrong like speeding then they will give me a ticket.... what are you guys doing to get so much police attention exactly?

I for one think police should be more heavily armed as they are first responders usually.

How many members of military died in 911 disaster?
ummm ?
how many fire fighter and police?
granted weapons wouldn't have helped much bit WHAT IF THEY COULD HAVE?

Its not right police are out powered by common criminals with full auto weapons or more weaponry.

I used to get stopped quite a bit because I live in a smaller city and I used to like to walk to places. I used to walk to the bar, a 24 hour doughnut shop, or the post office at night.

I remember walking home from the grocery store and turning on my police scanner. There was a report of a suspicious character where I was walking. Gladys Kravitz now has a cell phone.

I just stopped walking places. Fingers crossed that my car holds up.
