When Does Middle Age Begin? (In Your Opinion)

And is it the same for everyone?

for me it began with a major surgery (Tumor on my spinal cord in 2007) the year i turned 50

The most obvious change for me has been that I can still do the things I could at 30 but I had to do them a LOT SMARTER.

So for you it was actually a health issue which brought on middle age, rather than the age itself. It's good that you found ways of working smarter

I'm going to be 38 soon and I feel like middle age is coming on, especially as I watch the hair on the sides of my head going greyer each month

Forty is when I think we hit middle age.

That was about the time I started to get heavier and when I no longer felt good looking to younger chicks.

If you had worked out more and kept yourself more attractive to younger chicks, would you have been able to postpone middle age for 5 more years?

Middle age happens when:

Hot Young Chicks call you "Sir".

A waitress asks if your daughter is your granddaughter.

Old ladies smile at you in the grocery rather then avoid you.

You have to wear briefs because your nuts hang out of boxers.

You can't remember the last time you got laid but it was last night.

Ya as odd as that sounds its pretty spot on ya see the surgery was major neurosurgery and the recovery, while not as long as the neurosurgeon expected was still very long (roughly a year and now I have annual MRIs to make sure the 1% they couldnt remove isnt growing back and so far it isnt)

But the bottom line is most of my life I could d things with brute force, I had strong legs and strong upper body...one of the results of the surgery was to leave me with a small amount of paralysis in my ankles (cant flex them up) now that doesnt sound like much but lemme tell ya...LOL so moving things with strength and doing things with brute force are now more calculated to take advantage of leverage, doing things tha require a lot of getting up and down like laying my floors is now calculated to minimize the up and down aspect.

I still do the gym but even something like a treadmill is out...now its low or no impact like stationary bike, arc trainer or elliptical

all in all though I aint bitchin, I love my life and I have great friends and great stories and consider myself charmed.

Written as if I'd wrote it.

Much the same experience...after the back surgery (sciatic nerve) - I've had to adjust how I move, lift...even sitting for long periods. I've always been very fit and strong - very active in sports, cycling. But I've had to ease back on some of it so I don't lapse back into a sciatic problem. I'm more aware now of minor twinges and telltale signs.

50 - like the old saying goes...had I known I'd live this long - I'd have taken better care. Too many manual labour/heavy lifting jobs in my younger years.

Still...don't feel middle-aged, though.

I am dealing with this as we speak. Same issues as for working, lifting, trekking up mountains with heavy camera gear...all have taken their toll. Am on heavy meds and rehab 3 times per week. Hoping to avoid surgery but...

For me, age aint nothing but a number. Remember that song?

I met my mentor when I was 35 and he was 80 years old. Had a two year writing relationship before that. His thing for youthfulness? Never stop asking "Why?" He lived in Tangier and when I lived there I would go to his apartment for afternoon tea and pot smoking. His living room was like a doctors office filled with the artists, writers, musicians and actors of the day. All his friends or those coming to pay homage, from all backgrounds, races and religions and AGES.

When he was 80 he learned to use and compose symphonic music...on a digital workstation. He created beautiful, amazing music.

My attitude is to not let age bring me down. Use life experiences from youth as a library and of course...never stop asking, "why?"

For practical purposes middle age seems to be when hot young chicks stop looking at you a lover but as a customer.

About from the collapse of Roman empire, at least from that when the eastern part was gone as well.
