David Cameron has said he wants to see a British-Asian Prime Minister in the future.

The Prime Minister said there were still "too few people from ethnic minorities in top positions" in Britain and that it was clear this had to change.

Mr Cameron was speaking at an awards ceremony where his Culture Secretary Sajid Javid was named the most influential Asian in the UK.

Mr Javid, who has made a rapid rise through the Conservative Party and has been tipped as a future leader, beat Malala Yousafzai, the teenage education activist who was shot by the Taliban, to the title.

As the Prime Minister said he would like to see a British-Asian take the keys to number 10 he looked at Mr Javid and joked "just not immediately".

Mr Cameron said: "In Britain today there are still too few people from ethnic minorities in top positions, as has just been said the absence is glaring in the boardrooms of FTSE 250, in the chambers of the Houses of Parliament, on football managers' benches, on high court judges' benches and in our fighter jets, our naval ships and our armed battalions around the world."

He added: "When I hear those terms Your Honour, Brigadier General, Right Honourable, more often I want to hear it followed by a British-Asian name.

"And yes, one day I want to hear that title Prime Minister, followed by a British-Asian name - just not immediately if that's OK by you."

The annual power list, compiled by the Asian Media and Marketing Group, is in its fourth year.

It put Labour MPs Keith Vaz and Sadiq Khan at number three and seven respectively and Tory MPs Priti Patel and Shilesh Vara at numbers six and nine.

One Direction singer Zayn Malik made it to number 10. The list features 19 women, including the director of Liberty Shami Chakrabarti.
