So I replaced my laptop hard drive with an SSD...

... and now it's half as warm and twice as fast - should have done this earlier

and no need to buy a new laptop for the next 2 years at least

also switched to Win 8.1 - it's bearable when you use it with Classic Shell

SSD makes everything nicer, all but one of my computers has one.

Welcome to the cool kids club.

I feel that my i5 SSD laptop is faster than my i7 HDD desktop. I haven't tested it, but always feels that way! Definitely faster boot up.

the boot up is not even remotely comparable - before my laptop was somehow screwed up because of some unnessecary Samsung crap.

now it's plain Win install with the SSD and the system is up in seconds what took 5 minutes before

You have already admitted that it will shave several minutes off of your boot time. That is many hours saved a year. Time spent educating yourself is never time wasted.

Every minute you save is another minute you have for your "real work."

I recently added 2 plextor m6s 256gb ssd's in my PC. I install most programs on my WD 4tb 7200rmp hdd, but my windows 7 and many of the programs I used the most are on the ssd's.

I'm about to do the same thing with an older ACER I have collecting dust. When I changed over my desktop to SSD, I honestly could not believe the increase in performance in speed. Blown away.

If you DON'T use a SSD currently to run your operating system, you're going to kick yourself in the ass the moment you change over.

too much information?

I've been trying to figure out how to mount a tablet on a swingarm next to the toilet so I can read while taking a poop.

Nope, not too much!

I know what you mean.. I'm going to buy a i7 laptop very soon along with big LED with docking stuff.. It's going to be so nice to retire my 5+ year old PC and I might look into ssd. Going from a 2gig ram system to a 16gig one will be great too

SSD was only real improvement in speed. I've bought mine few years ago (for desktop, I can't work on laptop) and it was huge difference. Actually no need for any other upgrades like I was doing before.(CPU,RAM, graphics..). Just take care about setting options ( disable defragmenting, etc..)

I'm about to upgrade the HD's on my main PC. I think I am going to get an SSD for the OS and programs and then use regular HD's for storage.

how much impact will an SSD have on video rendering, if any?

not much - if at all

the rendering is always slower than the potential i/o speed even of a regular hard drive

it's more about opening and switching between programs

almost none, but a lot of impact on the initial edit...(if you have your scratch files on the SSD)

I'm planning to buy SSD for long time, but I'm too lazy to reinstall the Win and all the programs and move the data. So I've decided to wait until Win 9
Other thing is that I have encrypted disk with TC and I'm not sure how it will perform with SSD

I recently did the same to an i7 laptop running Win 8.1

Upgraded to a 1TB SSD and 32GB RAM

The machine is now simply amazing.
Will probably be viable for the next 5 years...

If you are going to do a SSD upgrade, get the fastest SSD.
There are some big differences out there in performance.

It would be awesome if someone were to develop a calculator/analyzer where you would input all the components (or model number if a stock build) in the system and then the analyzer would determine where the bottleneck is with your current configuration and offer suggestions for improving speed. I'm shocked someone like Newegg or Amazon hasn't offered something like this. It would be a lot of work to get started but once on it's way it would be a huge potential money maker.

by now I have everything installed I need and it works flawlessly.

And like I said - even Win 8.1 is bearable when you use Classic Shell - i haven't seen the stupid Metro start screen once since I installed it

If you have thousands of small files, or even millions like text files or pictures, it makes a substantial difference.
