Sonic Booooooooom !!!!!!

Thunder-like sonic booms are usually associated with aircraft breaking the sound barrier.
But one holidaymaker has captured a volcano that erupted with such force that it triggered a sonic boom and visible shockwaves that warped the clouds in the sky.

The video shows a plume of ash being thrown up in the air from Mount Tavurvur, in Papua New Guinea, followed by impressive rippling clouds and an eardrum-rattling explosion that rocks the boat.

Must have been pretty awesome to see it and capture it !!

I wonder how far away he was; it took 12-13 seconds from when we see it blow to when we hear it; it does not look that far away but it seems like it must be at least 10 miles

roughly 2 miles max visibility of land on the ocean is about 9 miles maybe 11 on a very clear day obviously things that rise way above sea level can be seen further but too much too clear in this video plus sound travels at roughly 1 mile every 7 secs

a mile in five seconds is the speed of sound I believe near ground level depending on the terrain. With them being on the water it should be around there.

Ocean does the tricks. Boating on coastal areas is tricky without map, as everything seems so close. Well, same for open ocean, but there is less to see anyways.

When I shot the first two launches of the Space Shuttle for NASA media back in 1981, it took about 10-12 seconds for the noise/boom to get to where I was. {In front of the countdown clock by the lakes edge}, and that is about 2 1/2 - 3 miles if I recall..

You see the explosion at 0:13, and hear it at 0:25. 25-13 = 12 Seconds X Speed of sound ( 0.211446403 Miles Per Second) = 2.5 Miles away.

I'm still none the wiser.

Seemed smart enough to me to A. capture it, and B. warn of the boom that was coming!
