Question for the Germans: Vegan Oktoberfest?

Serious question for those from the Fatherland. I am headed to a Vegan Oktoberfest this afternoon and it caused me to wonder; is there a vegan movement in Germany or is it still a meat and potatoes country? Tofu brats anyone?

Still very hard to find a vegetarian meal in Germany.
The Doner Kabob places are the best bet for some vegetarian options.

Meat and Potatoes all the way!

That is kind of what I am expecting to find there. I can't believe how far some people are traveling for this.

Speaking of Germany, Yesterday, Oct. 3, marked the anniversary of the same day in 1990 when West and East Germany ended their 45 years of postwar division, declaring the creation of a new unified country.

I don't know if that day is an official holiday but if it isn't it should be.

TBH. I am not sure that my German friends feel the same way. The Wall coming down let in a lot of riff-raff.

It wouldn't surprise me a bit if people from both sides sang that same song.

On a grander scale than a few individual opinions though I should think the consensus might be that it was a good thing in the long term for that country. Opinions are always going to vary though. On everything.

These days their economy, health care system, and standard of living all seem pretty high/strong to me.

It is hard to find countries with a higher standard of living. Unemployment is the lowest since 25 years, economy is doing fine.

The only people that complain are useless loser that in other countries would live under a bridge but in Germany they are still comfortable thanks to the social security system

I think this was the first Oktoberfest that the lines were longer for the food than the beer and there were almost as many food as beer vendors. I will count when I go thru the pics.

My friends are west German; the impression I got was the influx of Eastern Europeans in general had caused an unemployment issue that had never existed before. I think going to the Euro instead of the Deutsche Mark kind of stung a little as well.

Then you need to study economics.
An exporting nation with a currency much stronger than it's trading partners is not a good thing.

No surprise there were longer lines at the food stalls than beer stalls. Event like "vegan oktoberfest" is surely interesting for vegans, but not so much for beer fans.

your friends probably read too much BILD Zeitung, the printed equivalent of Fox News

like i said, unemployment rate is the lowest since 1990 and besides a small minority (mostly right wing/close to neo nazis), most people get along fine with the Euro by now

but germans generally like to complain about everything, doesn't mean it's true

Ahh Oktoberfest. For years we had a huge one here in Winnipeg. It was held at the massive Convention Center downtown, an upper floor hall the size of two arenas. The music and food and booze and partying and lederhosen went on for two weeks every September. I used to love getting over there at least once every year with friends for that German "dinner for 4" they used to serve. I'm sure they had a few vegetarian dishes but those wouldn't interest me. However the breaded schnitzel was to die for. The bratwurst with sauerkraut, the dumplings, and that horseradish they served with it could clear your sinuses. Put it all with a few giant mugs of beer and I was in Germanic heaven.... But then about 8 or 10 years back they stopped having it. *sigh*

Don't mind me, I'm just musing out loud here.

Not true at all. The introduction of the Euro was fathered by the Germans. Germany's Helmut Kohl wanted to get rid of the Deutsche Mark as it was too strong for the export oriented economy. The only ones complaining about the Euro are savers who think they don't get enough interest without taking a risk.

East Europeans shaked up the labour market in a good way. Germans can hire Polish, Czech or Dutch electricians for half the price, today.
