PHP is currently ranked as the most sought-after skill

https://www.elance.com/trends/skills-in-demand - Scroll down

Im surprised. I thought web was slowing down and its all about mobile now. But iOS isn't even in the top 10. Blows my mind, I thought it'd be the other way around hmmm

With most websites getting responsive templating, it's easier to continue to build sites with a PHP backend and HTML5 UI than it is to program an app.

Every time someone makes the opposite prediction, I just roll my eyes and go back to what I was doing.

To clarify - Java programmers are in most demand jobs, while PHP/web programming is most demand one time jobs.It is very simple why is that - a PHP project can be anything, could let say print hello world project, while JAVA projects are usualy on more serious note. Also, java programmers are like 2x or possibly even more paid then php programmers.

Many server side functions can be done with the client browser with less overhead and greater speed.

growth might be better indicator of what's "hot" now a days...

yea, php is in demand, but also everyone and their dog knows php now a days... so unless you are pretty good, you aren't going to make any great money with it...

Very interesting, this guy wrote a program and ran it in 7 different languages to test the speed.
the results are here https://github.com/unixpickle/Benchmarks

key is using the right language for the job, no one is ever going to do any serious computation with php, so the fact that php performs poorly on these specific tests is meaningless...

this is a more comprehensive comparison of languages:
Computer Language Benchmarks Game

on some tests, like this one, php actually gets quite respectable results:
k-nucleotide benchmark | Computer*Language*Benchmarks*Game

Wow, Java is fast - how does compiling work with Java again? C and C++ are compiled directly to executables, right, but Java has .....?

It really depends on the true needs of the project.
Whats the size of the project, budget, expected load, form function and features etc.

Yes PHP is notorious to be slow which is why some of developers "escaped" to ruby, and that is why facebook build their fork of PHP.But php authors said how they will with PHP 7 make serious update which will resolve speed problem once for all.
