Saying bad shit about NYC doesn't make everyone in Texas is an open-minded saint. Don't even try to act like there aren't caveman shitkickers there who are against any progress of anything that threatens their precious way of life and "freedom".

So they elect a gay mayor. The Texas Republican Party has one of the most anti-gay platforms of any state.

“Homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable alternative lifestyle, in public policy, nor should family be redefined to include homosexual couples.” The 2014 platform also seeks to deny the ability of same-sex couples to adopt foster children, and recognizes “the legitimacy and value of counseling which offers reparative therapy and treatment to patients who are seeking to escape from the homosexual lifestyle.”

That's just the tip of the iceberg of their anti-social shenaingans. What about all of the attempts to limit voting access and closing almost every abortion clinic in the state? Real champions of the people. Fuck Texas, yo.

Yes, the Texas Republican Party platform is indeed fucked up but it does not represent the beliefs of the entire state so it's not right of you say ''Texas this" or "Texas that" when you're only basing it on the GOP platform.

Yes, there are plenty of ignorant shitkickers in Texas but a majority of them live outside of the state's major population centers. Austin has always been a very liberal city. Houston has become a liberal city. Dallas isn't as progressive as Austin or H-Town, but it's much more liberal and open than any city in states such as Alabama or Mississippi. Plenty of gay people live happily in Dallas.

Someone saying that Texas is homophobic because of all the rural and small-town homophobic religious nutjobs who live in the state is really not much different than if someone were to say the same about Manhattan because of all the ignorant shitkickers from upstate or all the homophobic meatheads from Long Island.

Not only that but Texas Democrats have a long, storied history. LBJ hammered the civil rights act through the Senate. I mean absolutely just hammered the shit out of it. He was a badass. Then you have former Senator Lloyd Bentsen who delivered the most memorable line in vice presidential debate history. Then you have former governor Ann Richards. I saw an excellent play about her life a few years ago up here at the Lincoln Center. In the grand scheme of things, this is all recent or semi-recent history. It's not like when Republicans try to pretend that a majority of their voter base does not consist of racist rednecks because Lincoln was a Rebublican. So yeah, as far as national politics go, Texas has indeed swung sharply to the right. But Texas Democrats are still there doing their thing and they will be back on the national stage at some point in the near future.

Anyway, my point is that you're wrong for pissing on Texas. If you want to effectively communicate your agenda, you'd be better off pissing on Alabama or Mississippi or Louisiana or Oklahoma or one of more than handful of other states.

And yes, the ribs are good in Texas, especially in the hill country near Austin, but when I get the craving for BBQ, I'm more than happy going to Daisy May's, which is right down the street from my old apartment in Hell's Kitchen.
