News Silk Road 2.0 Founder Arrested

Ok so now another one bites the dust...

The FBI and Europol have conducted a joint operation to take down the internet?s thriving ?deep web? drug marketplaces.

The official FBI New York Twitter account just confirmed the seizure of Silk Road 2.0, saying that the site?s alleged operator, Blake Benthall, was arrested in San Francisco on Wednesday. He now potentially faces life in prison, the FBI says.

Benthall appears to be an employee of SpaceX, Elon Musk?s private rocket company. We?ve asked SpaceX for comment and will update this story when we hear back.

There are also reports that police have arrested a major online drug dealer in Ireland, as part of what is being called Operation Onymous.

Silk Road 2.0 was taken offline exactly one year after it went live on Nov. 6, 2013. Visitors to the deep web drug marketplace have been met with an official police notice informing them of the site?s seizure.

Yeah, it's staggering especially when you consider that after Silk Road was originally taken down that half a dozen popular dark net drugs marketplaces opened up. No doubt extra attention will be paid to all the copy cats.

In the criminal complaint against Benthall, the FBI claims that investigators were part of the original conversation that took place during the launch phase of the site, and that they were granted moderator privileges on the drug marketplace’s forum.

He gave them (the FBI) moderator status on the drug market's forum.

His whole user / buyer / seller list was available to them unencrypted. That means there will be a lot of nervous drug buyers and sellers right about now.

if anything they only got bitcoin addresses... any other communication, including names, addresses, etc would normally be encrypted, and only the sellers would have the decryption key...

and that's if they had access to the whole site, it sounds like they only had mod access to the forum... it's kinda like getting mod status on gfy, what would that give you? it wouldn't give you much useful info at all...

Update to the story: He admitted it all.

Blake Benthall, the man accused of running the deep web’s notorious illegal marketplace the Silk Road, reportedly confessed minutes after being arrested yesterday in San Francisco.

Ars Technica reported from Benthall’s first court hearing today, which lasted around 15 minutes. Federal prosecutor Kathryn Haun reportedly told the court that Benthall has already admitted to running the Silk Road.

“Mr. Benthall did admit to everything after receiving his Miranda rights — that he was the administrator of Silk Road 2.0,” Haun said to the court.

The bust was wider than Silk Road itself as more details come to light of which sites were targeted, how and why.

On Thursday the FBI along with other law enforcement agencies including the Department of Homeland Security and Europol announced that it had seized the Silk Road 2, perhaps the most well-known drug market to appear on the Dark Web since the takedown of the original Silk Road last year. What it didn’t announce is that at least two other drug market sites have also been busted, and more takedowns are likely coming. The drug markets Hydra and Cloud 9 now both display the same “This Hidden Site Has Been Seized” notices as the Silk Road 2, emblazoned with the logos of the FBI and Europol. Several other popular dark net markets were down Thursday morning, as well, though they didn’t display that banner. An FBI spokesperson tells WIRED that there will be more than three market seizures in total, with the full extent of the operation set to be revealed by Friday.

Other takedown targets included money laundering sites like Cash Machine, Cash Flow, Golden Nugget and Fast Cash. And agents have taken from criminal suspects more than $1 million in bitcoin, $250,000 in cash, as well as an assortment of computers, drugs, gold, silver and weapons that they had yet to fully catalogue.
