:mad Fucking Scammers

I had warned my 85-year-old mom about the “name” scam via phone. They call you, say “Is this Name” and you say “yes” which they record. They then use that tape to respond to automated phone systems to scam you.

Two weeks ago she told me about the phone call she got and they asked this question and she said “wrong number.”

Yesterday she called and said that she got a phone call. They said they had to talk to her about her Apple problem. My mom doesn’t have a computer but knows what Apple is. They begin to talk about the problem and she finally is asked if they can fix her Apple.

Mom think fast and says, “all my Granny Smith apples in my fridge are fine” and hangs up!

Her caller ID said “covid warning” so she answered it. Otherwise she ignores unknown callers. I explained that people with Apple computers who allow these morons to connect will have their passwords and possibly banking information stolen.

Most seniors are conned and it’s really sad. If you have older parents, warn them about scams via phone. I get email and text spam scams constantly.

That "Name" scam has been around for awhile - Unfortunately, many are not aware or thinking by saying "Yes" would cause any harm.
Sorry it happened to your mom ...

What do they do with the recording? - How can just the word yes pass any security check?..

It all seems a bit strange.....

A person tried to scam my friend and he almost fell for it. The scammer was really convincing. The scammer lied that my friend's grandson was in a wreck and was booked at the county jail. It sounded realistic because his grandson has been in a few car accidents. The scammer asked him to pay his grandson's bail, and his wife said good he needs to be in jail. They hung up. Thankfully he called his daughter to find out it was not true.

I’d read about it a while back. Certain automated phone systems require a “yes” to proceed with a transaction. If you look it up you’ll learn about it

They target seniors and I had told my mom fortunately. I don’t know if it’s a USA scam only

It didn’t happen successfully. If I hadn’t warned her, though, who knows. Her local newspaper didn’t write about it. She isn’t online.

this

they first will need details and those details will need to be sometimes spoken like mothers maiden name or what ever also...

I can´t see how this would work

The first time I heard about it was the caller asking for you by name. Apparently the scam is mutating and will probably keep going.

The sad part is that anyone is vulnerable to this and not just seniors. Y’all might get the call someday and now you’ll be aware.

If anyone calls me and asks “can you hear me?” I’ll just respond with “no comprende’” in an accent! If they ask about my Apple, I’ll say “I’m allergic to apples” and hang up!

Bump for more exposure..

Obviously this scam / countless other phone scams are strictly United States based.. -
Give it time before they find their way over seas.

I've had the same exact thing happen to my grandparents twice now. The caller, claiming to be a police officer, was asking for gift cards to bail me out of jail. Luckily, they did not fall for it.

These guys are ruthless.

I always tell my mother not to pick up unknown numbers, numbers from other states, countries, and also not to call them back.

The number is not listed. She doesn’t know how they got it but she has no computer. I just hate thinking about the people who get scammed. The local senior center has classes for learning the computer. I told her not to go. Too many scams and I don’t want her to deal with that crap. My father had a computer and got viruses constantly. He’d click every link and then wham. This was back in the early 2000’s.

I get spam from PayPal supposedly and they want me to click the link. I delete them but I’m sure people fall for it.

The scammers always come up with new ways to defraud you.

But her “Granny Smith apples” comment had me glad that she can think fast!

Others have answered but here is an example.

Guy I know at a service station got a call, They said "are you phil?" .
Phil says "yes".
Phil gets charged for yellowbook advertisement.
Phil calls company and hears a different question with his "yes" answer.
