They no longer offer renewal coupons.l

Unless you pay a yearly fee for their special service.

The best thing to do with Godaddy is to go to your Domain Details, grab the auth code and have it mailed to you and then transfer the domain to Namecheap or somewhere similar.

Just wondering is this the smart way for godaddy to lose customers!

I think they bank on people not renewing until a domain has almost expired by which time it is too late to transfer to another registrar and they have to pay whatever stupid renewal fee Godaddy ask.

They also make you cancel privacy to transfer the domain which means your personal data is available to be harvested and fear of that discourages some people from transferring out.

I never had a problem with them personally but only have a small percentage of my domains left with them now.

I have transferred domains on the day they were to expire, away from GoDaddy, and out to NameCheap, NameSilo and Name.com with no difficulty at all. The process is very easy.

- Unlock domains at GoDaddy and immediately have the auth codes sent to you.
- Paste the list of domains and their associated auth codes in the transfer form at your new registrar and pay for the the transfer.
- Watch your email account closely for the "click for approval email" and do it.
- Go to GoDaddy/ Domain Manager / Transfers / Transfers Out and click them to approve them as soon as you see them listed.

You can normally complete a transfer in this manner in 45 to 90 minutes. All three of the registrars named above have allowed me to transfer my names out of GoDaddy in about an hour.

Good luck.

I am surprised. Last time I tried one that was 5 days from renewal the normal Namecheap form rejected it, and so I gave it to them via live chat and they started it manually but Godaddy rejected it.

Never had any problems myself as long as I did everything by the book. You probably forgot to unlock it or something.

Could have been a one off mistake I guess. Will definitely try it again as the few I still have there come close to renewal.

How so? If you enter a domain that is <7 days you get auto rejected by new registrar as "domain unavailable for transfer".

Here is a little "trick" for you to try.

Go to godaddy and login your account.

Type in the domain name you are interested "to see" if it available.

Put it in your cart as if you are going to buy it...but DO NOT buy it.

Leave the site.

A day or two later godaddy will send you an email with a link for the domain you wanted at a discounted price!

You are welcome!

There are always codes available for new regs, most likely at the better prices then the "discount" price they offer in the situation you described

Renewal codes is the issue.

Not true. I just transferred 2 domains today... both to Namesilo from GoDaddy. They were scheduled to expire tomorrow. They're sitting in my NameSilo account. It took about an hour, give or take 10 minutes, to do it.

As soon as you pay for it at NameSilo, they look up your whois info, get the admin email address and send you an email asking if you want to proceed with the transfer. Click the link and then they email GoDaddy. Godaddy takes anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes to email you if you really want to do it. You click yes, do it. It gets sent to the central registry, that takes a few minutes. Then NameSilo tells you its done. Godaddy trhen sends an email saying they're sorry to see you to go and reminds you that you can transfer domains to them for as little as $7.xx

I have the exact same experience with NameCheap. I can transfer domains expiring in under 24 hours from GD to NameCheap just as easily and efficiently.

Maybe things have changed? I have had no problems at all transferring, so long as they are not expired or in redemption, they seem to transfer quite fast.

All that sounds ok, but are you saying you do not get "domain is unavailable for transfer" message when entering your domains in namecheap/namesilo? I always got that if it was <7 days...

Actually, I had that message once, just last week while moving domains out of GoDaddy to NameSilo. It turned out that I never waited long enough after clicking to unlock the domain at GD before trying to transfer them. I retried it about 10 minutes later and it was fine.

I don't about that. For us it's more abut ROI and value/service. We did not migrate our domains from GoDaddy over price. In fact, several domains we had at GoDaddy are more expensive where we migrated them, Name.com. We simply found that the overall experience and value is better with the other registrars we chose. It had very little to do with price.

I'm in the Discount club cause got enough domains to make it worthwhile to join that so my decision to stick with them is based on...

Cheap Renewals
US Based
24/7 Phone Support
Own Account Rep/Unbreakable Extra Security Installed

I sell domains so almost every end user I've sold to over the years already had a GoDaddy account which speeds up my Escrow.com transactions.
