I think that it's completely unsurprising because nobody gives enough of a shit to complain, vote and try to overturn such ridiculousness as current civil forfeiture laws. Also shitty.

Most larger police departments rely on seizure to fund their departments. I can see a need for them to "budget" for such things - they need to plan out their budgets in advance, and they need to estimate how much money the department will take in to plan ahead. That's just basic accounting.

I don't believe that police should have the right to seize what they do. If I use my pick up truck to haul large amounts of drugs on a regular basis, they "might" have the right to seize that. However, if I buy a Ferrari with drug money they shouldn't be able to take that, and they shouldn't be able to take someone's house just because they were cooking meth in the garage.

I also think anything seized should go to charity, not the local PD.
