I need a new computer. Any tips?

Hey everyone,

This morning I woke up and grabbed a coffee and went to use my computer like normal. The damn thing though, seriously, was sounding like it was dying and gasping for breath.

I ignored it of course, and started up a game. I was kicking the shit out of some fools when suddenly it just fucking shuts off. lol. I turn it back on and blue screen of death errors following by other crashes.

Anyways, brought it up to kitchen to open it up. Took my shop vac and gave it a 5HP blowjob. So much dust came out - and went all over my kitchen. lol

I think this beast is on it's last legs. I need a new rig. I want to build this new one myself, and haven't done that before. I've replaced everything inside computers etc, but never built one myself.

Current PC Specs
2 ATI Radeon 6850's Crossfired - 3 monitors (3 1920 x 1080 screens or 1 5760 x 1080 screen) Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 - 6GB DDR2 Ram, 600 GB Solid State HD, (Asus Motherboard??)

What I need in new PC
I need a graphics card that can support 3 monitors, if there is such a single card, or two good ones. I need a powerful CPU / motherboard also.
The computer needs to be able to play all games on maximum settings while recording video or live streaming at 1920 x 1080p 60FPS minimum as well. (I've been making dumb ass YouTube video game videos lately)
Probably need another good Solid State HD as well.
Also, what type of RAM should I be looking at?
Power Supply?

Also any sort of info on what kind of tower and cooling I should use would be helpful.

Thanks folks

Lol, no worries mate. I don't allow apple devices in my home ;)
I've been holding a grudge since the late 80's since going to a friends place to play a game and having to deal with a 1 button mouse. Arrrrr

Thanks, will be fun to build when I figure it out.

Sounds like your hard drive failed mechanically. The only other thing it could be is a partially stuck fan, but that doesn't explain the BSOD. If you previously haven't had an issue with performance, just get a new hard drive.

Buy and design on whatever Walmart (or any big box store) has on sale. That way the vast majority of surfers will be able to use your websites flawlessly. Design for the masses.

If you want a kickass gaming box for your own use that's one thing. However, do your sales designing/scripting on an entry level box.

I personally think it is an issue with the fans inside the graphics cards. The hard drive is a solid state one, so I don't think it has "mechanical" parts like regular hard drives. I have no data issues or errors (did some checks)

Pretty sure it had some sort of emergency autoshutdown when temp hits around 110C or so to prevent meltdown. lol. I think it was something like that.

That sounds like a sweet machine, what graphics cards are you using? Any trouble with games on max settings / resolution?

Jesus, not even Windows/Linux guys can make computer threads without your Apple hate boner popping up.

It's even worse now, we don't even have ONE button... Oy vey.

I've never built a Windows/Linux machine before, been a Mac User for a long time now, but /r/buildapc - planning on building a computer but need some advice? This is the place to ask! may be helpful for you.

Good luck man, and I hope it doesn't completely die on you before your new rig.

Just finished my 6th build this weekend and like most of them I went for
proven hardware (4790k i7, mid level asus MB/geforce GPU, 16gb ram, ssd and 850w psu) so it's faster than what I need, stable, can render videos quickly etc and can run larger programs effortlessly without going so over the top price wise that the benefit isn't noticeable.

I dont play PC games (xbox one) but most people are still of the opinion that an i5 processor is totally fine for gaming and an i7 would be overkill (games right now do not use hyperthreading) and that the gpu is the more important part of a mainly gaming biased rig.

Whichever way you go, don't skimp on the PSU since whilst the more expensive ones may appear overpriced compared to companies offering a similar wattage for less, the more expensive ones can maintain their rating or very near it constantly whereas some of the cheaper brands claiming similar wattages are more of a "peak power" indicator and to me, that just spells unstable.

What youtube videos do you do - lets Plays or trolling ?

The noise sounds like dirty fans. Don't bother cleaning them out if they start whining. They're cheap, so just replace them. High temps in your box may cause electronics to malfunction resulting in BSOD.

To maximize heat dissipation, I suggest using an elegant aluminum case like Lian-Li. Steel cases trap heat, are heavy and just plain ugly. Read some reviews to find cases with good internal air flow distribution.

A good power supply is important. You should only get a powerful one with a single 12V rail. Multi rail power supplies are shit.

If you want to use lots of RAM, you must get 64-bit Windows 7 Pro or higher, not the 32-bit, Starter or Home editions. 32-bit Windows OS caps your RAM limit to 4GB. 64-bit Windows Starter and Home editions (Basic/Premium) cap your RAM limit to 8GB/8GB/16GB regardless of how much memory is installed.

Video cards with Displayport support multiple monitors. You will need an active adapter to take advantage of it.

it was clogged with dust, hence the noise. Once a fan is clogged with dust it will overheat and shut down. There wasn't anything wrong with your computer, you just need to clean it more often.

Thanks for the info, I think I am going to aim for something similar to what you have. I may need the higher CPU power because when recording video or streaming it seems to use a lot of cpu power rather than gpu, so I think I need both.

I only started doing the YouTube videos just for fun and to screw around and learn some video recording stuff. I do blind lets plays & a few other game related vids. Getting better at it over time, audio is hardest to figure out so far. I play new games, retro classics, and everything in between.

If you want to see some of my dumb assed videos, check out my idiotic channel ;) youtube.com/SkidRowTrash. I'd suggest the Postal 2 video it's pretty fun.

Thanks everyone, I look forward to building this beast unit.

I run 2 nivida GeForce gtx 680 and run 2 apple cinema 30' displays... no issue however those cards are 3 years old.. pretty sure there are faster cards avaialble

GeForce GTX 680 | GeForce

GeForce GTX 680
The GeForce GTX 680 is the fastest and most power efficient GPU we've ever built. But we didn't stop there. GPU Boost dynamically boosts clock speed for extra performance. New FXAA and TXAA modes eliminate jaggies. And NVIDIA Surround lets you game on three monitors from a single GPU. Now available on both PC and Mac.

motherboard with x99 chipset
intel haswell E chip of your choosing
16GB DDR4 ram with 2400 mhz or higher (important to check motherboards preferred vendor list to determine what brand chips to use)
nvidia GTX 970 or 980 video card, can run 4 monitors
EVGA supernova 750G2 power supply, its 750 watts
a high quality case from fractal design or corsair
samsung SSD
corsair water cooler for CPU

if you wanna go cheaper you can go with a Z97 chipset on the Mobo, intel devils canyon CPU, 8GB DDR3 RAM & the GTX 970 card.

good luck.

there's no point for him to go with z99... lga2011.. DDR4 is more expensive then ddr3 and so are the cpus that are lga 2011. for what the OP needs this would be overkill. z87 or z97 with a core i7 4770k or 4790k with 8 to 16gb of ram and a good PSU and graphics card is good enough.
