Oklahoma bill banning AP U.S. History Makes Students Study 10 Commandments, Sermons, Reagan Speeches

This is what happens when you vote Republican..........

An Oklahoma bill banning Advanced Placement U.S. History would also require schools to instruct students in a long list of ?foundational documents,? including the Ten Commandments, two sermons and three speeches by Ronald Reagan.

The bill, authored by Oklahoma Rep. Dan Fisher (R), designates a total of 58 documents that ?shall form the base level of academic content for all United States History courses offered in the schools in the state.? Many of the texts are uncontroversial and undoubtedly covered by the Advanced Placement U.S. History course, such as the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and Gettysburg address. But the bill also has an ideological and religious bent. In addition to 3 speeches by Reagan, the curriculum as includes a speech by George W. Bush but nothing from any Democratic president since Lyndon Johnson.

Fisher?s bill was approved by the Education committee on an 11-4 vote.

I'm not entirely against religion being taight (taught, not practiced) in school systems so that the kids can learn first hand what a steaming pile of gorilla shit it really is.

Also, to a certain extent, religion as a whole does have at least some sort of historical significance as far as how many people it has killed, how many wars have been started etc.

1. there is nothing wrong with that bill

2. there is not 1 notable speech by Clinton or Obama on par with the speeches by Reagan and Bush included in this revision.

3. there is nothing wrong with having advanced history students read the decalogue.

I see Malcom X's "Ballet or Bullets" speech is included.

"The Ballot or the Bullet" is the name of a public speech by human rights activist Malcolm X. In the speech, which was delivered on April 3, 1964, at Cory Methodist Church in Cleveland, Ohio,[1] Malcolm advised African Americans to judiciously exercise their right to vote,
but he cautioned that if the government continued to prevent African Americans from attaining full equality,

it might be necessary for them to take up arms.

If you read it all, someone is paying back the Koch brothers. The GOP has to go with myths because they don't have facts on their side.

Even though they are not my beliefs, I have no problem if they taught my child about religions. I have always said the best thing my parents did was show me most of them and let me choose what worked for me.

so i took the time for y'all and am c&ping the part that the OP distorts,

feel free to fill us all in on the fairy tales being taught by this requirement:

from the legislation:

5. Objects of historical significance that have formed and
influenced the United States legal or governmental system and that
exemplify the development of the rule of law including, but not
limited to, the Magna Carta, a complete overview of the "Two
Treatises of Government" written by John Locke, the Ten Commandments
and the Justinian Code;

let us all know the problem with teaching that history.

I've always thought President Reagan was great. However, I read an article yesterday that made me question everything I thought I knew about him.

You seriously want to argue that the sermon 'Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God' is historic fact? This is just one example out of many that is in the bills language that REQUIRE kids to learn. Now, fill us all in just how retarded you really are.

http://webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us/cf...0FISHER-KB.PDF

From Wikipedia......

Most of the sermon's text consists of ten "considerations":

1. God may cast wicked men into hell at any given moment.

2. The Wicked deserve to be cast into hell. Divine justice does not prevent God from destroying the Wicked at any moment.

3. The Wicked, at this moment, suffer under God's condemnation to Hell.

4. The Wicked, on earth - at this very moment - suffer the torments of Hell. The Wicked must not think, simply because they are not physically in Hell, that God (in Whose hand the Wicked now reside) is not - at this very moment - as angry with them as He is with those miserable creatures He is now tormenting in hell, and who - at this very moment - do feel and bear the fierceness of His wrath.

5. At any moment God shall permit him, Satan stands ready to fall upon the Wicked and seize them as his own.

6. If it were not for God's restraints, there are, in the souls of wicked men, hellish principles reigning which, presently, would kindle and flame out into hellfire.

7. Simply because there are not visible means of death before them at any given moment, the Wicked should not feel secure.

8. Simply because it is natural to care for oneself or to think that others may care for them, men should not think themselves safe from God's wrath.

9. All that wicked men may do to save themselves from Hell's pains shall afford them nothing if they continue to reject Christ.

10. God has never promised to save us from Hell, except for those contained in Christ through the covenant of Grace.

jesus fucking christ. you really are that stupid eh.

you clearly have no fucking idea what the difference is between teaching religion and teaching the historical fucking fact that religion had a PROFOUND fucking impact on the forging of this fucking country and that fucking sermon is a fucking fundamental part of understanding that.

jesus fuck you are stupid. it's stupid fucking nitwits like you that confuse, pervert and distort history and actually think that sermon should be overlooked in the study of AMerican HIstory because, you know, it's religion.

fuck you.

stupid fuck, there's a fucking monument still there where that sermon was made, dickhead.

and you think that should be left out of fucking advanced history.

Yeah, I'm sure the point of using a sermon in school isn't to sermonize.

you too don't get the difference between teaching history and teaching religion. that sermon and the message in it happened and influenced this nation.

But let's burn that sermon and act like it never played the hugely significant role it played in the history of the USA, because you know, religion and republicans. that's solid learning right there.

wow.

Yeah sure does, when they try to rewrite history and dumb down the rest of the population to their level by sabotaging education. They're very wrong. About as wrong as you can get.

When in all of recorded history have conservatives EVER been proven over time to be on the right side of an issue? From Galileo to Salem, nothing but lunacy, depravity and brutality. You'd think you'd learn after a couple centuries, but if it were possible for everyone to learn from history there would be no conservatives.

Are they also going to teach the fact that Reagan LIED when he said he was in Germany helping free Nazi concentration camp prisoners...when in reality he was in California getting a suntan?

Take a deep breath

A really deep breath

Picture your happy place

Clear out all your thoughts

Let the calm wash over you

Feel your troubles drift away

Hear the soft patter of rain on the window

Feel the wind in your hair

Your movements are effortless

The fog is lifting

Everything is quiet?

?and all you need to do is breathe.

Be honest did any of you actually take AP US history and the placement exam? I did and got a 5 which allowed me to get 13 hrs of college credit (near one full semester) right there, I also took AP macro econ and AP micro Econ as well as AP biology and AP government, i had over 70 hours of credit before setting one foot at my college. Some of my classmates took MUCH more than me and had full years already done, those that don't want to teach this are doing nothing but holding all people back, what a shame. This is terrible. History is history, sorry if you don't like it but some bad and terrible things happened, the reason we teach it so we can try and not repeat our past mistakes.

BTW speeches by Ronald Reagan are fine THEY ARE HISTORY but the commandments please that is nothing more than trying once again to force religion where it needs not be. I'm not Democrat or Republican but believe an objective history is fine, covering EVERYTHING, but religion does not belong there sorry and I'm glad to have had the big advantage over other students when going to college.

Terrible......

According to the dumbfuck OP logic, we shouldn't teach that slavery happened either. You know because that would actually teach slavery.

Civil war? Never happened .

Dumbfuck.

Luckily that doesn't happen, majority of the US history taught is about whitey oppressing non whitey. But if republicans get their way this will be deemed unamerican and replaced with religion

Of course ignoring that religion has been oppressing and causing war and death for thousands of years
