...but it doesn't have guns... I thought the military learned it's lesson with that mistake when they built the F4 Phantom.

I've read in the past it isn't that great, that they tried to make a jack of all trades and it's ok at all but not stellar at any.

Kinda like the ummm Phantom F4.. It was a good aircraft but certainly not the best of it's era.

However, perhaps the end goal of this aircraft is not to be the best, but perhaps a good alternative for small air forces in other countries, kind of like the role the F4 Phantom fell into as it was a cheaper alternative than our other high dollar jets and was able to fill the role of both fighter/interceptor as well as bomber.

I really can't see this F35 being used widely as a replacement to the F22, but maybe used by the Marines whom operate a small number of aircraft, well small compared to the US Navy or Air Force..

the problem of these aircrafts (f22 and f35) is that they seem expensive.

Not as expensive as buying several aircraft to cover multiple roles. Added to that all the costs of spare parts more pilots ect..ect. A multi purpose aircraft even if the per unit price is expensive can quickly earn it's keep when other factors are taken into account.

Now also keep in mind that Russia makes more economical products which are often pretty damn good. However many countries will not buy from Russia because of their anti social behavior. This is why things like the Ukraine situation really hurt Russia in spite of it's self..

It's one thing to buy AK47's that many countries now produce, however buying expensive military toys requires a bit of stability from the seller.

Saab JAS 39 Gripen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

i could also paste the eurofighter and the rafale, but while their cost per unit is lower, they see pretty expensive to use.
If you compare these airfighters with the F35... well the only one that seems better (on the paper) is the f22...

however the combat radius of the gripen seems pretty low

The gripen looks interesting but it's really untested. When was the last time the Swedes went to war. At least with the US, we road test our shit..

As for good price per capability for a small country, the SU35 is a good bargain for it's capabilities, but no one is going to buy it and then be at the whim of Mr Putin, at least no one in Europe not of the former block..

If only they'd contacted the guy who lives in his car to consult on the development in a multi national, multi billion dollar experimental aeronautical engineering project to produce 300 million dollar military aircraft.

Wow! Superb!

If I have lot of money, I will ask the manufacturer to turn those bomb compartments into lots of storage space and then I can go anywhere. All thanks to the vertical take off & land.

scathing reviews of f35 platform. the AF version won't fly right if the fuel is warm, so all the fuel trucks are being repainted from camo to white to keep the fuel cool. the marine version will require a complete change in strategy to fit it in, it's not a harrier replacement. nothing about this isn't designed for anything specific, so every application has consequences.

at $150million a pop.

I don't think you can compare these.... You are talking about a jet vs a STOVL - massive difference. An STOVL can take off like a helicopter, a regular jet cannot.

Speaking of US military jets, there was a training accident today, when the instructor & student collided. Both pilots survived but the instructor's aircraft was lost as he had to eject, but the student managed to land missing half his wing..

Student pilot blamed for midair collision lands F-16 with wing sheared off - CBS News

must be incredible experience to fly on something like that. It reminded me on Yakovlev Yak-141 so I've found something that is new to me, and that Lockheed and Yakovlev had agreement and had cooperation on STOL projects

That's one way of looking at it.

But on the other hand, all of the money we have invested into our military has paid back huge dividends. Let's take, for examples, computers. Computers were first conceived by Alan Turing, who.... The first real computers were Torpedo Data Computers used on United States submarines during WWII. ENIAC was the first Turing-complete computer, which was used by the... US Army. Fuck me in the ass with a chain saw, the Internet itself started as ARPANET, which was run by... The United States Department of Defense.

It's just like saying the space race was a waste of money - look at all the way society benefited from the space program.
