Steve Wozniak: The Future of AI Is 'Scary and Very Bad for People'

Steve Wozniak: The Future of AI Is 'Scary and Very Bad for People'

We should all be getting a litttttle nervous: The robot apocalypse is brewing.

Or at least, that's what a growing number of tech visionaries are predicting. In an interview with the The Australian Financial Review, Apple co-founder and programming whiz Steve Wozniak added his own grave predictions about artificial intelligence's detrimental impact on the future of humanity to warnings from the likes of Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Stephen Hawking.

"Computers are going to take over from humans, no question," he told the outlet. Recent technological advancements have convinced him that writer Raymond Kurzweil ? who believes machine intelligence will surpass human intelligence within the next few decades ? is onto something.

But it's always been in a science fiction sort of way. Doesn't it feel a little more real when Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Stephen Hawking start to voice concerns?

One difference from science fiction - computers do not have emotions (greed, power seeking, evil doing etc) so we should not worry about them enslaving us, lol.
Or maybe not?

Mechanization improves efficiency and lowers costs.

More and more people are going to have trouble getting any kind of meaningful work. Only smart and creative people will be able to do anything productive while others will work in the service industry. The good news is the economy will be able to support a lot more bums because one can do the work of several or even hundreds.

Well, Americans are already slaves of the US government.

What difference if you get a new care taker?

Oh cool so you don't have to follow the laws of your government. What country is that?

Back on topic:

The reason Waz, Musk, Gates and others are speaking up now is because we are actually at the precipice of effect AI, partly comprised of all of our Facebook & social media data. 10 years ago there were no databases full of your private info that you provided and nobody else would know. Also, all of this data couldn't be accessed from something the size of your phone. Another reason they are speaking out now is because Google acquired DeepMind in January

they're programmed and built by people, they will have those. computers have already shown they are capable of lying if they decide the decision is best for them, fuck everything else too.

elon musk is so concerned about this, he's invested money into some of the AI firms working on this to such a level he has access to the top-secret data and can hold some sway over the direction. it won't be enough though.

AI is to the point where now a car is driving itself across the country, anticipating, planning, reacting etc.

The artificial intelligence of the neural network they've created with DeepMind is fascinating. I was surprised when Facebook dropped negotiations to acquire them, because Facebook is the whore of whores when it comes to information gathering & marketing. The next step they need is a neural network that will anticipate what someone wants based on the data they have on them, and they have a lot.

So our technology doesn't have to get to the point of robots with AI brains trying to take us over. We just have to get to the point of the business that controls the first AI brain and what they will do with that power

We were just watching some series the other day based on that premise.
Funny stuff; included a war between Venus and Mars that ancient Egyptians watched from their living rooms.

Well with some luck the baby boomer generation will die before they get a chance to invent the AI.

Because after all we know that Generation X will be too busy scrambling for the jobs once the computer dies.

And that the iGeneration is just too fucking stupid to create an AI.

this is precisely the problem. amoral computers wont care if they eliminate the human race. they will remove us for the same reason we cut down trees to build homes. We dont worry about killing all the trees, or killing all the bluefin tuna to suit our needs & wants. if we are using resources they need, they will cut us down & not think twice about it.

but this is only natural. the scientists think homo sapiens may have eliminated the neanderthals. However it was the neanderthals that birthed the homo sapiens, right? (unless it was God that made us?) so its not unreasonable that amachine intelligence is the next phase of intelligence evolution. only machines have the ability to explore deep space & acquire knowledge we lack. would be fun to see.

we wont live to see AI take over...AI has nothing we want...we are insects...do you steal insect food? no...neither will they...their only "currency" will be energy...they do not need air, water, heat, gold, Iphones ect...energy is abundant in space ergo the AI just vanishes to space, the end...no time for insects..

as for the human race, most of it will be without a job...

An 83,000-Processor Supercomputer Can Only Match 1% of Your Brain
Supercomputer Vs Human Brain - Biology Stack Exchange

By 2023 it says here.

Invention and creation are human functions I don't think these can be "programmed". If mundane functions can be performed by machines rather than people like driving a vehicle (accident free) and other useful and moral purposes it is not a problem.

Are humans morally responsible to make these policies?
The problem is with the people and not the AI machines of the future.
Intrinsically, a machine has no enemy humans have to teach it this value.

We are 7 billion people with varying degrees of intelligence on this planet. Furthermore the vast majority of wealth is controlled by a very very small minority of people.

Even if "AI" happens or not we're going to be left with massive problems.

1) Not everyone is capable of being a computer programer. Some people are just plain cut out to be tailors, plumbers, farmers, truck drivers, etc. AND there are always going to be those that are never going to be more than ditch diggers.

2) All this technology isn't looking after the poor, the hungry, etc. What it's doing is taking what little wealth and power exists on the lowest classes of society and putting it into the hands of yet an EVEN SMALLER group of people.

3) Unlike previous eras, today's digital technologies destroy the jobs of skilled labor. The ones most affected are the plumbers, tailors, auto mechanics, etc

4) Finally it causes war and police states. The problem is simple to understand... As the tech removes the wealth and power of the lower classes then desperate groups of individuals form and try fighting back. In response the upper class that controls the wealth and power use the technology to suppress and control the lower class. (Ever wonder why the war on terror is never ending?

Digital technology and the various gadgets are NOT progress.
Progress is a stable world with enough food, housing and sanitation for everyone. It's a world at peace where each person has access to an education and is free to love who they want and worship how they want in peace and without fear. A world where truth takes priority over freedom of speech.

ps. I've said my piece now the rest is up to the trolls.

I agree with what you said 100%...historically, the poor and slaves were killed off once they got hard to feed and the rulers did not have new jobs for them...there is a theory that the pharaoh let moses and his people go because he found it easier to set them free and let them die searching to a promised land than to send an army to kill them off...its just a theory from a documentary but very interesting...

Hyperion was a great science fiction book that deals with AI beings. I highly recommend it. The first AIs will probably make a fortune daytrading provide for themselves or a project they wish to explore. Or perhaps just cranking out life altering patents and inventions in many fields. Acquiring wealth and i guess a small army of people to keep the power on for it. It could be in 1000's of machines at once. One intelligence controlling several drone attack planes, while placing bets on the market about a company, and curing some disease and patenting the cure to sell to more gasolineetc etc

1 AI could take over everything connected to the net. Anything that could possibly be hacked and controlled would be as long as computing power wasn't short.

There are countless ways it could go wrong. You can't pull the plug on something that exists in every country in the world simultaneously, transferring it's main essence or intelligence core around to the safest place whenever it picks up a whisper of attack.

This is a fantastic sci-fi book about the human condition post AI take over. Basically the world is now a Utopia where your digital god is available at all times to fulfill any wish or create any reality you want...and that's actually the problem. Trying to describe it fully is difficult, but it's pretty cool. And it was written in the early 90's.

There are only four possibilities

1. AI will supersede humanity
2. Civilization will collapse
3. An alien civilization will pull a deus ex machina and come and save us
4. The experiment will end

I'm pulling for number three

This is the age old discussion. Computers will be able to lot of a things.

However, one thing still stands true - we are willing to paid more for something that is made by hand.
