I have one and I love it. After the first 7-10 days, it will learn your routines and habits then start to control the temps in your house for you. I like seeing how much energy use there is is very handy. The auto away mode is great too and saves a lot on energy bills. I installed mine in summer and noticed about a 15% saving on my utility bill not to mention my temps were a lot more comfortable.

I'd highly recommend it, figure if your average bills are $150 a month and it saves you 15%, it pays for itself in 1 year. I didn't buy it with cost savings in mind, it was more about convenience for me but as someone who hates giving these companies more money than I have to, nest makes sure I don't.

I always remember seeing people say you shouldn't mess with the temp since it will use up more energy getting back up to temp than you would save by lowering the temp for several hours. Was that all bullshit? Or maybe from a timewhen furnaces weren't as efficient?

What if you're home all the time? Is there any benefit to it?

Probably just the ability to adjust the temp from your phone instead of getting off your ass.

Bought it this morning and love it so far as to what it can do.

I have had my 1st WIFI issue here in more than a year and a modem reboot needed to be done.

If this issue continues the Nest is worthless for me as I want them to run houses when I am away from them without any intervention. If it messes with my WIFI, it is creating other issues for me as well.

I have on the same WIFI a printer, 1 smart TV, 1 Ruku box, 1 tablet. A PC and a Video Security System are also connected to the DSL modem. While I was trying to connect my Sell to my WIFI to Chrome-cast it took the modem down. Never happened before this.

If you have spare unused wires on the thermo line then you can use them as a "C" ...

So 2 years ago I rented house up on Lake Superior during the steelhead run. The homeowner told me about 10 times that he had just bought a nest for the house. Obviously he was excited, would be great for a vacation home.

So, we went out one day for the afternoon bite on the rivers. I turned the heat up to 74 before we left since I knew me and my buddys would be chilled when we got back. It was cold and rainy.

We get back and the guy had turned the heat back down to 68. I checked my phone and see he had sent me a text saying that he didn't want the heating bill run up so he had turned it back down. If we were cold, start a fire.

I replied that if he pulled that shit again I would rip the fucking thing out of the wall and throw it in superior. The temp did not change the last 2 days we were there.

I have one and I bought both of my parents one for Christmas. I don't think either of them has set it up yet. Should ask for those back, LOL. Love mine.

You can manually override anything (unless they password protect it) but I feel your pain.

...on the other hand for any rental management companies or VRBO homeowners, these can be a goldmine!

Good for minimizing waste, but limiting the heating/cooling by renters would lead to terrible reviews very quickly. I would be furious.

The owner could schedule "away" levels and leave the "at home" settings more comfortable and overrideable.

Changing a renters manual stetting unless it is highly unreasonable is a terrible way to do business.

A Nest thermostat is included with our new house that we're taking possession of in about 4 weeks. I'm looking forward to playing with it see what it can do. I love how it saves energy and how I can review my energy stats online, and the interface looks cool too. A friend of mine that has one swears by it and saves it saves him about $261 per year. If this is true it has already paid for itself. Pretty cool.
