When to get rid of cable TV?

I saw an article this morning that HBO may move to a streaming option. I think that's just one more good reason to cancel my cable television service, or at least just scale it down to basic cable only.

I'm watching it less and less now, and mostly for special one-off shows and sporting events.

Watch all those other mediums for a month while you still have cable. If you can do that, you're ready

It isnt that they are moving to a streaming option they already do that with HBO2go Its that they wont require you to have a subscription to cable via a cable tv service provider like they do now.

Its a big step and with services like Sling TV its coming everywhere eventually...hell even now the cable providers are doing network delivery and it makes sense satellite is PRICEY by comparison...eventually it will all be internet even the downlink stuff to the affiliates

We haven't had cable (or any type dish) in over a year. I rarely regret it.

Once you aren't required to have a subscription, mine is gone. I right now everything I watch is through the Roku. I love the HBO app.

Dropped cable tv a long long time ago. A half decent antenna gets many channels over the air, 22 for me, and the internet has everything else you might ever want to watch in one place or the other. You can always sign up again if you miss it.

We dropped cable over a year ago. couldn't see paying 94.00 for watching 3 or 4 channels we liked!

I tried dropping cable and the only thing that stopped me was wanting to watch the live news channels, to feel connected. It's not the same going to drudge or cnn as it is to watch msnbc or Fox Anyone find a way around that without cable? I'm by the ocean here with hills & cliffs blocking all TV signals, we are forced to have only one cable provider as our option.

Cable and even Satellite is dead. We're connecting Bell Fiber in a few weeks when we move. All streaming content directly to new TV's via Ethernet, not Coax, and as a bonus : 250 megabits per second download AND upload. Can't wait.

My cable company (optimum)went and did something pretty scummy...

If you want to ditch phone + TV and have internet only, they charge double the price for the internet.

I've been trying Hulu, and I never use Netflix except for House of Cards and I have to say that I would really miss being able to channel surf. I'm not sure yet.

Just have basic cable. Been debating killing it but probably wouldn't save a ton as a double play deal cable/internet and there are a handful of shows I do DVR for when I have time...

Street Outlaws
Bates Motel
Shipping Wars
Counting Cars
Pawn Stars
etc...

basically all I watch is A&E, History, Discovery channels along with Netflix. So if my cable could only have those 3 stations I'd be fine.

they reserve part of your up/down for the tv though. from what i've read its not that great unless you have a direct line to your house, not just connected to a hub or whatever down the road. either way, its still the same big media bell company selling you tv through fiberoptic lines instead of satellite or cable lines.

I basically only watch AMC and the movie channels on satellite. Total waste of money for what amounts to a few regular shows I watch. Seriously thinking of ditching it completely and just sticking with Netflix. If it wasn't for Walking Dead and Game of Thrones I would have cancelled already.

I do miss Al Jazeera but cable changed to the watered down American version so it wasn't much of a loss.

Interesting. For those of you who have dropped cable, what do you miss?

I know that if I dropped cable, I'd not be able to watch certain sports programming. I have, however, dropped TMN because I just wasn't watching it anymore. That was $15/month right there.

Apple TV is the exclusive launch parter for HBO Now. It's a way for them to capture some revenue from all the cord cutters. Great idea.

Cancelled it 2 years ago.

Only show I really watch is Walking Dead, and I get that on Amazon Prime. I dont miss wasting my time watching TV and sitting there doing nothing productive.

we watch maybe 1 hour of the idiot box a day. So no cable or anything just Netflix.

I think HBO plans exclusive to Apple products only.

I recently moved and went with Bell fibe, super fast uploads is awesome!

We did go with a small cable package because of the deal they offered so $30/month on top on my internet cost, seems like a simple yes. I get to watch live sports which is big for me! And it keeps the wife happy for the most part, she misses a channel or 2 on the small package.

A friend has one of those over the air antennas, he gets most of the local and major tv channels.

Yes that's how it is supposed to be. A genuine fibre optic cable into the house, then a switch to Ethernet.

Where I live now I pay 2 providers : 1 to Bell Satelight for TV, movies etc, and the other to videotron for Internet.

The new system will not only save me $60 a month, but I also got them to give me 4 months free + free movies + free streaming service (I forget the name but its supposed to compete with Netflix), and this new Live program restart feature, 6 TV support, and able to record 4 shows at the same time. Awesome.

For bandwidth, the sales rep said that its 250mb/s dedicated to Internet, but I am going to assume he is wrong anyway because if he's right, that would be too awesome. But even if he's wrong, I don't care because I'm not watching TV when I'm working, and I don't do alot of downloads anyway. It is UPLOADING That I will be most interested in using. Right now with videotron I am only getting 10mb/s upload and 62mb/s download.

Bidirectional 250mb/s will be kick ass.

I've had a number of bell reps try and sell me on fibe but there are a lot of bad reviews out there so i was weary of trying it. it was better pricing than rogers, what i use now. upload is horrid with rogers the down is only about what you get but its enough. i guess i'd have to see how someone else's fibe on my street is before i would consider switching.

The problem with going "just basic" in my system is that it doesn't save you that much money. It's not much more expensive to get the full package.

If I want to cut my cable bill significantly, I need to ditch it all together.
