This has been a major goal of US strategic doctrine ever since the end of World War II. Prior to 1971, Britain (the former colonial power) policed the region and its oil riches. The US had the Iraq oil fields during the first gulf war and did not take them. If this is all about oil then why didn't they take the fields the first time?
I think this is all about 9/11 and teaching the middle east that they shouldn't ever fuck with us.  |
