"The aircraft was delivered on 1991-02-05 to Lufthansa." Average age for a commercial plane. So, what happened?

Those poor people what an awful place to crash. Just read they said no survivors, so sad

You see the chart on the OP's news story? See how over 15 minutes the plane gained altitude over 1000 feet higher then the flight plan, then quickly descended over 10 minutes until it crashed?

Very strange.

Doesn't mean much by blaming the budget /low cost airlines. It could happen to any type of planes. There are so many factors involved why a plane may crash, sometimes its the problem of pilots too.

Germanwings is under Lufthansa. Also maintenance rules are the same for lowcost carriers and for regular carriers here in EU (and I think everywhere else also), so this has nothing to do with the flight being run under a lowcost carrier.

Also the plane was last time checked on Monday (yesterday) and the pilot has been flying for 10 years for the company.

It doesn't matter, budget airlines or not. Germanwings was launched in 1997 and as wiki says it's the first aircrash in their history.

Glad to hear not as bad as US. 60 Minutes did a story about underpaid, drunk and over worked regional US carrier pilots that made me think twice about flying regional. Some regional pilots in US are paid as little as 17k a year.

Keep a positive thought, I guess.

Just did a quick wiki search on regional airlines, because I didnt knew whats that really, but as far as I can see a regional airline isn't really the same as a low cost carrier. As you can see GermanWings is flying to many destinations - EU is pretty much covered https://www.germanwings.com/en/infor...e-network.html However as far as I know the largest in EU is RyanAir..

Ah, there you go. I was thinking regional which does look different.

I've always like Lufthansa. Looks like GW is somewhere between regional and big time. Anyway, I hope it was just fate or bad luck and not terrorist or negligence.

That's a beautiful part of France. When I lived in Barca we used to cruise up through there to hike. Sad day today.

Budget anything, pay lower wages to staff and usually attract a far less experienced workfotce. Pretty sure that is what people are hinting at here

as previously said: Germanwings = Lufthansa

this could be a possible lead: http://avherald.com/h?article=47d74074

i had just read about that incident a couple days ago.

there basically the same happened - plane went down about 1000m per minute - and was only saved when the pilot switched off the main computer

wrong though - Germanwings is not some 3rd world trash airline - the planes are serviced by Lufthansa Technik - about the best out there

Its not the lax rules, its the airlines like American, who cut corners and falsify docs, yes, they've been caught at it and fined, who put passengers at risk. Anything to bump the bottom line.

the A320 also seems to have some tech issues according to CNN.

Other budget airlines are pretty safe in the EU.. Ryanair and Wizz Air never had a fatal accident and they have shitload of routes.. Wizz Air is flying with the same planes (Airbus 320)

now just someone explain me ... how is possible there is no singed ground or the ruins of the plane? it was not that short trip, the plane felt down in 1/3 of its way, so it must have tons of fuel in the wings some problems on the plane, broken window, and the pilots decided to throw all the fuel out, if that is possible? i really dont understand, where is the apocalyptic earth as always when plane felt down like this? just thinking aloud, hope we will hear soon ...
