You have to kick out all the renters before you can go condo.

Google lawyer Jack Halprin sparked protests in San Francisco's Mission District last year when he began evicting tenants from a building he had recently purchased and moved into.

Halprin began the evictions under the Ellis Act, which allows landowners ? many of whom had purchased buildings at a discount because of rent-controlled tenants ? to push tenants out so the buildings can "go out of business."

This usually happens so that the buildings can be converted into condos.
